The folks at IDW Publishing have offered an awful lot to horror fans in recent years. Through the company’s IDW Dark imprint, many beloved horror franchises have expanded on the page, including Smile and A Quiet Place, among others. It also includes original hits such as Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. Now, as the line approaches its two-year anniversary, the publisher is celebrating with a line of variant covers that will give several franchises – even ones that don’t typically dabble in horror – the horror treatment.
Fango is proud to exclusively reveal the first wave of these covers as part of the IDW Goes Dark initiative. This naturally includes some Godzilla titles, which have thrived during the Hei-Sei era as of late. But it also transforms titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek into horror via some impressive cover art, which you can check out below. The covers will all be hitting shelves in October, just in time for spooky season.

Star Trek: Zero Point #1, in particular, is of interest as this is the first time that the cover has been revealed anywhere. It’s also pretty fun to see Sonic the Hedgehog dabbling in horror. IDW Dark has brought us an Event Horizon sequel, a Sleepy Hollow sequel and other titles that are right at home in the genre. What makes this initiative fun is that it’s expanding the scope of horror across IDW’s wider line. Heather Antos, Senior Group Editor at IDW, had this to say about it:
“The response to IDW Dark has exceeded even our wildest expectations. From breakout original horror titles like Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees and The Exorcism at 1600 Penn, to iconic genre-defining classics like 30 Days of Night, readers have embraced the incredible range of stories we’re bringing to the line. At the same time, our licensing program has allowed us to expand that vision even further, welcoming legendary horror franchises such as Event Horizon, Smile, A Quiet Place, and more into the world of comics. And the most exciting part? We’re only getting started.”
“What better way to celebrate than by spreading that darkness across our entire publishing slate with a month of special October variant covers?” Antos added. “This October the future of IDW is only looking darker…”
Look for all of the IDW Goes Dark variant covers on shelves in October.
