Insidious: Out of the Further
INSIDIOUS: OUT OF THE FURTHER (Credit: Sony Pictures) Sony's panel at CinemaCon delivered the first trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further, the sixth installment in the long-running supernatural horror franchise hitting theaters this summer. Directed by Jacob Chase (Come Play) from a screenplay he co-wrote with David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2, Orphan), in Insidious: Out of the Further, Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe. Resident Evil
RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY (Credit: Sony Pictures) The teaser shown for Zach Cregger's hotly-anticipated Resident Evil hasn't been made available online yet, but lucky CinemaCon goers were kind enough to detail the rundown of what happens. To nobody's surprise, it sounds like the Barbarian and Weapons director has gone nice ‘n gnarly for his take on Capcom's iconic survival horror gaming series, telling an entirely original new story not related to any previously known characters (sorry, Leon S. Kennedy stans) or any of Paul W.S. Anderson's previous Resident Evil movies. Read the full rundown of the first Resident Evil teaser here.
Escape from New York
John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (Credit: Sony Pictures) A remake of John Carpenter's Escape from New York has been in talks for years now, with both Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriguez and Radio Silence attached at different points. Fingers crossed the new iteration, announced at yesterday's StudioCanal panel at CinemaCon is more successful. No director has been named for the project just yet, with Studiocanal EVP Global Marketing and Distribution Hugh Spearing just announcing that a remake was in development in partnership with producers The Picture Company (A Complete Unknown). All we can do for now is speculate on who'd star – original star Kurt Russell's IRL son Wyatt Russell, perhaps?
The Howling
THE HOWLING (Credit: Sony Pictures) Along with Escape from New York, Studiocanal also announced they're developing a “reimagining” of Joe Dante's 1981 werewolf horror The Howling, which celebrated its 45th anniversary last month. Starring scream queen Dee Wallace, The Howling followed a television news anchor who ends up at a resort populated by werewolves. No news yet on who will direct or star in the new version, but with Robert Eggers' Werwulf also on the horizon, we're due a good werewolf renaissance.
Bloodborne
BLOODBORNE (Credit: FromSoftware) As the video game adaptation trend continues to pick up speed, PlayStation's horror-action title Bloodborne is officially the latest to get a big screen movie version, with Sony Pictures announcing an an R-rated animated feature is in the works. Gaming YouTube giant Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin (Iron Lung) will officially produce, along with PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the project continues Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ expansion into game-based storytelling following Uncharted, Twisted Metal, HBO’s The Last of Us, and the upcoming Helldivers film from Justin Lin starring Jason Momoa. Stay tuned.
Ice Cream Man
ICE CREAM MAN (Credit: Valeria Flores/The Horror Section) CinemaCon attendees got a new look at Ice Cream Man, the upcoming horror from Hostel‘s Eli Roth which hits theaters on the appropriately summery date of August 7. Of no relation to the 1995 horror film of the same name, which starred Clint Howard as a demented ice cream vendor who uses human flesh in his recipes, Ice Cream Man follows inhabitants of the idyllic suburban town Bayleen Bay , that descends into madness after a mysterious ice cream man serves frozen treats that turn children into homicidal maniacs.
