The summer is coming to a close but horror stays winning. Yes, Spider-Man: Brand New Day once again topped the charts for a fourth weekend in a row with another $39 million. But at the box office, it’s all relative. To that end, the real winner, relatively speaking, was Insidious: Out of the Further, which killed it on its opening weekend.

Directed by Jacob Chase (Come Play), the sixth entry in the Insidious franchise opened with $25.3 million domestically at number two for the weekend. It also added a very healthy $35 million internationally, giving it a $60.3 million global start. Against a reported $18 million production budget, that makes this sequel instantly profitable for Sony Pictures. While it may not be a critical darling, it’s proof enough that this franchise still has a fair amount of gas left in the tank.
2023’s Insidious: The Red Door opened to $33 million in North America, which was a record for the series. But its global opening was around $64 million, meaning that Out of the Further wasn’t all that far off. The Red Door finished its run with $186 million worldwide. The latest entry opened a little closer to Insidious Chapter 3 ($22.6 million opening/$120 million worldwide). So it’s probably going to finish somewhere between those two installments, which is more than good enough to keep this train on the tracks.
The latest Insidious sequel centers on Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in who discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the heart of the Insidious universe. When something evil comes after her, Gemma discovers an ability that changes everything: she doesn’t just enter The Further, she can bring what lives there back to the real world. Once the demons realize her power, our world becomes their playground.
If there’s a bad in this for Sony and Blumhouse, it’s that the reception for Out of the Further has been a little soft. Critical reviews for the movie were mixed, and audience reception was so-so, with a C+ on CinemaScore. What that means for its ability to hold in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but even with a big drop in weekend two and beyond, this movie is going to make its money. It’s a firm financial win all around.
Looking ahead in the realm of horror, NEON’s It Ends expands this upcoming weekend, a semi crowded one at that, with Coyote vs. Acme and The Dog Stars also opened. Then, September kicks off with the arrival of Fall 2: Deadpoint alongside Adam Wingard’s Onslaught.
Insidious: Out of the Further is in theaters now.
