Best New Horror Movies To Stream At Home

August has many thrilling and disturbing choices among the best new horror movies to stream at home. Let's get started: Netflix brought back the sequel to one of the biggest horror hits in recent memory, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. For Chucky fans, they have six of the franchise's movies available, and the big snake movie, Anaconda. Yes, the giant snake is back.  Netflix also has the premiere of The Last House, starring Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, on August 7.  It is the story of a family that becomes trapped in their own home with no way to escape. Things get more desperate as they start running low on food and have to face the force that is keeping them trapped.

Prime only has two scary movies this month, but they are films that both leave a lasting impact. Primate, the movie where a rabid chimpanzee spends most of the running time ripping off people's faces, is on the service, and a stone-cold classic from the late great David Lynch, Blue Velvet. Shudder has a chilling August in store for you with four new watch parties. What can be better than watching horror movies with a crowd of fellow fright film fans on the internet? It's always a blast, and the double features are curated to introduce you to new films.  You can enjoy the following watch parties this month:

The service will also have four premieres, with two Shudder Originals, Penny Lane is Dead and Hellcat, and two Shudder exclusives, Buffet Infinity and, in good news for cryptid fans, The Yeti. Don't miss out on the two Tales From the Crypt movies that Shudder has made available this month. Tales From the Crypt: Demon Night is a movie that is not celebrated enough. Directed by Ernest Dickerson, who is responsible for some of the best episodes of The Walking Dead, has directed episodes of The Wire, one of the greatest TV shows ever made, and the scary movie, Bones, is a great undersung director. The film, starring Jada Pinkett Smith, William Sadler, and Billy Zane, has humor and creepiness as the fight between good and evil in the world comes to an out-of-the-way diner. If you've ever wanted to watch Peter Jackson make a funny movie about ghosts and serial killers, The Frighteners will be one of your favorites, on Shudder this month.

HBO Max has a solid list of films for this month, with Zach Cregger's Barbarian, Drew Goddard's 21st-century classic The Cabin in the Woods, and Jaume Collet-Serra's film about one extraordinarily evil little girl, Orphan. All three are great fun with shocking surprises. Speaking of shocking surprises, if you ever wanted to find out what would happen if Kevin Smith decided to make a horror movie that involves walruses, Tusk is also available. Director David Lowery's Mother Mary will premiere on HBO Max as well.

Screambox has wisely chosen one of Mario Bava's most influential and gruesome films, A Bay of Blood, for their streaming stable in August. Mario Bava is one of the Italian maestros of horror who started out as a cinematographer, which is why his films are so beautiful, and became a director with the classic Black Sunday, although people on the sets of The Day the Sky Exploded and Caltiki: The Immortal Monster stated that Bava had directed those films without credit. Bava would go on to direct the anthology film Black Sabbath, Blood and Black Lace, and Planet of the Vampires. 

Bava's influence on the horror genre is still being felt today. The film also has an environmental theme and one of the top ten WTF endings in horror cinema.  Screambox also has an intriguingly titled movie called Spandex-orcist, which seemingly combines exorcism films with exercise movies. Perhaps they use exercise routines to foil Satan? The only way to find out is to watch.

Paramount+ gets the gore going with Overlord, a World War II-set movie with Allied soldiers fighting against the products of gory Nazi experiments, both Cloverfield films, and all three of the From Dusk Till Dawn movies.  The streamer also has an amusingly titled movie, Organ Trail, which is a horror Western that is not based on the horror video game of the same name.

Peacock will be showing off with both Escape Room movies, the ones directed by Adam Robitel, both of the Gremlins films, and the first three Insidious movies in the franchise. If you are looking for a film that is grotesque and bizarre, Peacock has got you, because they have selected M. Night Shyamalan's Old as one of August's choices on their service. Old is really something else, a standout in Shyamalan's career that goes for it with queasy gusto. It is a film that Shyamalan fans have probably already watched, but it deserves to be seen by horror fans who love weirdness.

Hulu has something really special this month with the premiere of The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn, which is the long-awaited director's cut of the second X-Files film. While you will also have the option of watching the film that was released in theaters in 2008, Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files, has “restored the horror elements of the film” that were excised before the previously released cut was shown in theaters.  Vrach Frankenshteyn is Russian for Victor Frankenstein.

Bloodstream, the newest streaming service on the block, is coming into August very strong with one of the most infamous films that horror fans will dare each other to watch. Which movie is it? It is A Serbian Film. Either you have seen it (or read some spoilers), and you know what we are talking about, or you don't. It is an infamous movie for its pitiless plot that ends in a hopeless scenario.

Bloodstream has also brought the cult film, Anthropophagus, by Italian director Joe D'Amato, the gorgeous and deathly masterpiece by Michele Soavi, Cemetery Man, and Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia's wild horror comedies, The Day of the Beast, and Perdita Durango to your screens. The Australian movie Patrick is also on the streaming service, and it is an unsettling story of a man in a coma after he murdered his parents, but his evil acts have not stopped.

In The Day of the Beast, a pious priest deliberately commits evil acts to find and destroy the Antichrist, and Perdita Durango is the story of a false Santeria priest who is convinced to make real cannibalism part of his ceremonies. To review, there is cannibalism, necrophilia, and desecration of the innocent in Bloodstream's August selections. The streamer also has the erotic vampire films, Vampyros Lesbos written and directed by Jesús Franco, and The Velvet Vampire, directed by Stephanie Rothman. The streamer has three film exclusives this month: Carry the Darkness, Evil Follows, and Tenebris.
