Years after he starred in beloved horror projects like Twin Peaks and Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight, Billy Zane is returning to the genre. Deadline reports that he’s set to star in Wekiwa, a new creature feature filming this fall.
Written and directed by Richard L. Anderson, Wekiwa also stars Kevin Chapman, Alex Trumble, C.S. Lee, Oliver Wyman, Ty Neckar, Tyler Steelman, Xhaania Wright, and Caroline Jane West. The film’s synopsis is as follows:
Summer, 1983. A showman (Trumble) has sunk every dollar he has into a resort on a Florida island the Seminole have warned about for three hundred years. A British documentary director (Zane) arrives with four beautiful young performers (Wright, West, Wyman, Neckar) to shoot the commercial that will save him. A county marine biologist arrives to find out what is wrong with the lagoon. Nobody on that island will say what is in the water. By Sunday, every one of them will wish they had.
Wekiwa is produced by Salomé Breziner and Scott Rosenfelt, and is set to begin filming next month in Orlando as Anderson’s first directorial effort since 2021. He’s most well-known for his sound work, which won him an Oscar for Raiders of the Lost Ark and nominations for Poltergeist and Daylight.
“We wanted the kind of film that sends an audience out grinning and a little afraid of the water,” said Breziner and Rosenfelt. “Richard has spent forty years teaching audiences to believe in things they hear before they ever see them. That instinct is all over this film.”
No release date has been set for Wekiwa. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
