In the wake of The Black Phone 2 wrapping filming, director Scott Derricksonโs already got his next project lined up. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Derrickson is teaming up with C. Robert Cargill to co-write and direct an adaptation of Road of Bones, a 2022 horror novel by Christopher Golden. No casting for the film has been announced as of yet.
Per THR, Road of Bones is โa supernatural thriller set in Siberia along the Kolyma Highway, a real highway that was built in Stalinist Soviet Union using the labor of prisoners from the regionโs gulags. Lore has it that hundreds of thousands of inmates perished during the construction of the 2000 km road and due to the permafrost, it was judged easier to just built atop of the bodies. Goldenโs book is described as a mix of folk and survival horror. It tells of an American documentarian who, intrigued by the roadโs history, ends up fighting for his life in one of the coldest and most remote places on Earth.โ
Golden will serve as executive producer on the adaptation of his book, alongside Vince Cheng and Pete Donaldson. This is Cargill and Scott Derricksonโs fifth collaboration, after writing Sinister and Sinister 2 โ the first of which Derrickson directed โ as well as Doctor Strange and both Black Phone movies together. Derrickson also recently directed The Gorge, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, which Cargill served on as producer.
While we wait for more details on Road of Bones, though, fans certainly have something to look forward to. The Black Phone 2, which will again star Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, is set to hit theaters on October 17. Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw are also returning for the sequel.
Road of Bones has not set a release date. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more details.
