August is getting down to business with the top horror movies streaming this week. New films on the list include the streaming premiere of The Last House on Netflix, which came with the spectacle of a real-life man who could not escape from a “living billboard” replica of the house from the movie at Sunset Boulevard and Selma in West Hollywood. The publicity stunt was a sensation, drawing crowds of onlookers eager to say hi and try to communicate with the man who wrote notes to people on the ground.

The “living billboard” was a publicity stunt, but it was particularly evocative of the film and an interactive experience that was more imaginative than the usual methods used to promote movies. It seems like it was also highly effective, judging by the position the film took on this week's list.
Another new film this week is the second movie by director Jeff Wadlow, who directed The Devil's Mouth, which entered the top ten last week and retains a spot this week. The fungal horror movie, Cold Storage, is also back to keep sporing and spreading its horror comedy among home viewers.

Obsession - Streaming on Peacock
OBSESSION (Credit: IMDb) To no one's surprise, Curry Barker's second horror movie, Obsession, tops the chart once again. We learned earlier this week that Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights has added Nikki to their list of roaming characters in the park during the event, so the film has reached outside of the cinema and become even more of a part of our cultural landscape.
The film stars Michael Johnston as Bear, Cooper Tomlinson as Ian, Megan Lawless as Sarah, and Andy Richter as Carter. Inde Navarette plays Nikki in a breakout performance that might just be another award season contender for the genre.
Obsession is now streaming on Peacock.
The Last House - Streaming on Netflix
THE LAST HOUSE (Credit: Netflix) Netflix made a real-life splash last weekend after the streaming service “imprisoned” an actor in a billboard overlooking the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The man, wearing a bathrobe, was writing messages to the excited crowds who gathered on the sidewalk to find out what was going on. It was a very effective publicity stunt for Netflix's newest scary movie, The Last House, for the film's streaming premiere.
The film stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura in the story of a family trapped in their own home by an unknown force. One day, the family members find that there is no way out of their home, and things become more and more desperate as they start running low on food, water, and other things they need to live. Who or what has trapped them in their home, and is the world still there are the disturbing questions that the family asks itself.
The Last House is now streaming on Netflix.
The Long Walk - Streaming on HBO Max
THE LONG WALK (Credit: Murray Close/Lionsgate) Taking a walk takes on new meaning in The Long Walk. Imagine a United States under the thumb of a cruel military dictator who has decided that the best way to weed out the enemies of his reign is to hold a contest every year where only one survivor gets a fortune and one wish for anything his heart desires, and the rest of the competition gets a bullet. What's even more disturbing is that the contest is broadcast to make sure that the populace gets the message.
There have been other stories, some by the same author, Stephen King, about corrupt government that maintains its control by killing its enemies and the poor through a televised game, but The Long Walk stands out because of the skilled direction by Francis Lawrence, the script by JT Mollner, and the heartbreaking performances by the cast: Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill.
The Long Walk is now streaming on HBO Max.
The Devil's Mouth - Streaming on Prime
THE DEVIL'S MOUTH (Credit: IMDb) It's the second week in the top ten for The Devil's Mouth. For those who love a scary shark movie, the difference here is that the type of shark in the mix, namely, a bull shark. Bull sharks are part of a species called requiem sharks, an ominous name, that live in brackish or freshwater systems, not the water of the open ocean. Just when you thought you were safe in the water, as they say.
Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, Gavin Casalegno, and Nico Hiraga star in the film, directed by Jeff Wadlow (Fantasy Island), who has two movies on this week's list. Thailand is a beautiful place, and 31% of the country is reserved for national parks, but the movie was filmed in a cave system normally used for training and on a soundstage.
The Devil's Mouth is now streaming on Prime.
Cold Storage - Streaming on MGM+
COLD STORAGE (Credit: StudioCanal) Fungal horror in films is having a resurgence, with the fifth film among the top horror movies streaming this week. While HBO's The Last of Us has been holding up the banner proudly on cable television, we haven't had as many terrifying fruiting bodies in movies. However, we now have another film to add to the list.
Georgina Campbell, Joe Keery, and Liam Neeson star in the film with appearances by Sosie Bacon, acting legend Vanessa Redgrave, and horror favorite Richard Brake. It was directed by British filmmaker Jonny Campbell, who has made a previous horror comedy about extraterrestrials, Alien Autopsy, in 2006.
Primate - Streaming on Paramount+
PRIMATE (Credit: IMDb) Filmmaker Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City) has brought horror home with Ben the chimpanzee in Primate. Human beings are used to having their home be a place of safety with the people and animals that they love. Natural horror movies that deal with pets can turn that assumption upside down as Primate does, in gory fashion.
Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, and Troy Kotsur star in the movie as the humans, and Miguel Torres Umba stars as Ben the chimpanzee. The film uses practical effects and a chimp suit to bring the character alive.
Primate is now streaming on Prime.
Exit 8 - Streaming on Shudder
EXIT 8 (Credit: IMDb) This Japanese adaptation of the video game from Kotake Create has officially been part of the top ten for a month. Exit 8 premiered at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the festival's midnight screenings and is distributed by Toho, the studio most famous for the Godzilla movies and for Akira Kurosawa and Studio Ghibli's films.
Kazunari Ninomiya, Yamato Kochi, Naru Asanuma, and Nana Komatsu star in the film, which was directed by Genki Kawamura and co-written by Kawamura and Kentaro Hirase. It has a lot on its mind for a movie with a small cast and limited locations. It puts a man in a mysterious trap that he can only escape by paying attention to what he is doing and not going on autopilot.
Imaginary - Streaming on Hulu
IMAGINARY (Credit: Parrish Lewis) If you were wondering what film was director Jeff Wadlow's second film on this roll call of the most popular scary movies on streaming, wonder no more. It is Imaginary, which tells the story of a woman who is married to a touring musician and finds that one of the children has an imaginary friend who is more real and dangerous than anyone could have imagined.
DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, and Verónica Falcón star in the film, which takes place partially in another dimension called The Never Ever. This is also the first of two films this week that star Verónica Falcón.
Imaginary is now streaming on Hulu.
Lee Cronin's The Mummy - Streaming on HBO Max
LEE CRONIN'S THE MUMMY (Credit: IMDb) Yes, this is the second film that Verónica Falcón stars in this week, and the Mexican actress makes a great impression in Lee Cronin's The Mummy. Falcón plays the grandmother of the family who suffers through the disappearance of their beloved daughter, until the daughter is returned to them eight years later as a seemingly comatose and dangerous creature that is unlike the girl they used to know.
Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, Shylo Molina, Billie Roy and Hayat Kamille star in the film directed by Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin. Cronin wanted to reinvent the Mummy as a different kind of creature in this film and has succeeded with gruesome bravado.
Lee Cronin's The Mummy is now streaming on HBO Max.
