The trailer doesn’t give too much away but it does tip its hat regarding its time-bending premise. There’s a man in distress, a mysterious mirror and a cool-looking monster amidst a great deal of mystery. It leaves us with a lot of questions but best leaving wanting questions answered rather than feeling like you’ve seen the whole movie already. The synopsis for the movie reads as follows:

“After the death of his teenage son shatters his family, a grief-stricken detective discovers an ancient subterranean chamber capable of opening pathways to parallel universes. Desperate to reach a world where his son still lives, he enters a deadly labyrinth of shifting chambers guarded by a monstrous entity — where the only way out is through the Dark.”

The script was written by Nathan Shane Miller, who previously worked with Tibbenham on Surviving Confession. Tibbenham also worked alongside director Scott Derrickson on Sinister, several times dubbed the scariest movie ever made. But this is very much Tibbenham’s baby and has been for a long time.

“Fourteen years ago, a writer named Nathan Shane Miller sent me a script. I read it in one sitting, and I haven't been able to let it go since, Tibbenham said in a statement. “Follow the Dark is a film about grief – specifically, what desperation does to a good person. What happens when a father cannot accept that the world is indifferent to his loss. When descending into the abyss feels easier than grappling with our sorrow head-on. I think most of us understand that impulse. The need to undo the thing that broke us. That's the terror at the heart of this film, and it's more frightening to me than any monster.”

The cast includes Arifin Putra (The Raid 2), Hannah Al Rashid (The Night Comes for Us) and James Cosmo (Highlander).
