Cult indie horror video game Mouthwashing officially has a film adaptation in the works with two horror heavyweights at the helm.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Mouthwashing adaptation will be directed by Jennifer's Body helmer Karyn Kusama, and produced by The Black Phone and Sinister‘s Scott Derrickson. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (Kusama's The Invitation) will pen the script.

Sony Pictures, fresh off the resounding success of another horror game to movie adaptation with this year's Resident Evil, picked up film rights to Mouthwashing from developers Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex.

Frequent Derrickson collaborator C. Robert Cargill is also on board as producer for Crooked Highway, along with Vince Cheng.

Upon release in 2024, the FANGORIA Chainsaw Award-nominated Mouthwashing was a huge hit with critics and fans upon release, and for good reason. Inspired by terrifying sci-fi horrors like Alien, Event Horizon, Sunshine, and The Thing, the low-poly, first person Mouthwashing puts players through the psychological ringer as a crew member of the spaceship Tulpar, stranded in space after a mysterious crash that may or may not have been caused by the now-mutilated captain, Curly.

Last year, we ranked Mouthwashing as one of the most deserving horror video games of a film adaptation, and although Kusama wasn't our initial pick to take on the role, we're incredibly excited to see what she does with the project. Stay tuned.
