The streaming services are gearing up to bring the best new horror movies to stream at home, into your living room in anticipation of Halloween. It's not quite October, but the sheer number of scary movies, repertory films, and TV shows has increased like zombies clawing their way into a football stadium in search of tasty flesh. Netflix has two films from the Alien series, all four movies in the Jaws franchise, three examples each from the Resident Evil series, both the live-action and animated versions.
Netflix will premiere a new series, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, and the second season of Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85 this month. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is the fourth season of the true crime anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Previous seasons told the stories of infamous serial killers Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer, and the high-profile trial of Erik and Lyle Menendez. Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, Season Two, is the continuation of the animated spin-off of the popular Stranger Things series. Both shows are set to premiere on September 17.
Prime has some deadly duos: films that have remakes that were released decades apart, but still had a big impact. The first is Cape Fear, with the original from 1962, directed by J. Lee Thompson and starring a terrifying Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck. The remake was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred an equally horrifying Robert De Niro in the role Mitchum made famous and Nick Nolte. Having both films available on the streaming service is clever since Apple TV recently released the third remake of Cape Fear, starring the spine-chilling Javier Bardem as Max Cady and Amy Adams as a miniseries. All of the adaptations are based on the John D. McDonald novel, The Executioners.
The second duo is Carrie, the classic 1976 original adaptation directed by Brian De Palma, with an all-star cast of acting talent including Sissy Spacek, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, and John Travolta. The remake is the 2013 movie directed by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry), which stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, and Judy Greer. This duo is likely about Prime wisely getting two of the adaptations in front of the audience before Mike Flanagan's Carrie miniseries debuts on October 7 on Prime.
Prime has some other great choices with Arkasha Stevenson's excellent prequel, The First Omen; George A. Romero's prescient and underrated fourth sequel in his Living Dead series, Land of the Dead; Halloween III: Season of the Witch; three movies from the popular The Purge series; and no less than three of John Carpenter's most loved films.
Shudder is taking your hand and leading you into the darkness with Shudder Original films like Parasomnia, about a woman with night terrors; Goody, Goody, about a couple who realize something is very wrong during a home birth while trapped in a snowstorm that stars Samantha Robinson of The Love Witch; and Bloody Tennis, the story of a student at a tennis academy in Europe where competition is raised to deadly levels.
Prolific horror director Alice Maio Mackay's film, The Serpent's Skin, is being released on Shudder on September 7 and will stream alongside four other films directed by Mackay, Bad Girl Boogey, T- Blockers, Satranic Panic, and Carnage for Christmas as part of Shudder's Queer Horror collection.
The horror streaming service will also release the Shudder Exclusive film, Mārama, about a Māori woman who becomes aware that some of her ancestors were the colonizers who subjugated the Māori people and who decides to get revenge. It's also time for the third season of The Creep Tapes, starring Mark Duplass as “Peachfuzz,” a genial serial killer who tricks his victims into videotaping their own murders, which is produced by Duplass and Patrick Brice, who also directs the show. This season, Kate Siegel is in the first episode, which is intriguing.
The big news for HBO Max this month is the premiere of the incredibly successful first feature by 21-year-old YouTube creator Kane Parsons, Backrooms. Parsons has been making films about The Backrooms, a liminal horror creepypasta, since 2022, and that series became a worldwide viral hit. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve and is scheduled to start streaming on September 25. Other highlights on HBO Max are the return of Talk to Me, the bone-chilling first feature by Danny and Michael Philippou, two films from Ty West's X film series, Maxxxine and Pearl: The X-Traordinary Origin Story, and both Zombieland movies.
Screambox has two scary documentaries, Generation Terror, with interviews from writer and producer Simon Barrett (V/H/S, V/H/S/2, You're Next, The Guest), who wrote the upcoming horror movie, Onslaught, in a continued collaboration with director Adam Wingard. Barrett's directorial debut was the overlooked Seance, which brought together elements of 70s girls-in-danger films like Satan's School for Girls. Directors Joe Lynch (Suitable Flesh), Alice Lowe (Prevenge), Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers), William Malone (House on Haunted Hill), Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Hannibal), Jeffrey Reddick (Final Destination, Don't Look Back) are the other horror experts who appear in Generation Terror.
The second documentary is The Degenerate: The Life and Films of Andy Milligan, about the legend and reality of the New York City-based exploitation director who made films that shocked and puzzled film fans. John Waters, no stranger to exploitation films, said of Milligan, the underground filmmaker, “Can a genius be untalented, too?”
Paramount+ will premiere the sixth Scary Movie, the first horror movie parody installment in the franchise in over a decade. It brings back the Wayans Brothers to the writing team: Marlon, Shawn, Craig, and Keenan Ivory Wayans, and Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall back to the cast. Director Michael Tiddes, who has previously helmed two A Haunted House parodies, was in the director's chair for this new Scary Movie.
You can also find classics like Tales From the Darkside: The Movie, The Dead Zone, Event Horizon, Red Eye, and The Relic streaming, along with five movies from The Prophecy series and all three Mimic movies.
Peacock has a hefty list of 56 movies and is probably just getting into top shape for October. The list pretty much has something for everyone, from the romantic vampires of the Twilight series, six films from director M. Night Shyamalan, both of Ridley Scott's newest sequels in the Alien series, Alien: Covenant and Prometheus, just as the director has indicated that he plans on directing another movie with the devious android David/Walter One, which will include the “chaos of AI“, and disturbing comedy set in the restaurant world, The Menu, and Zelda Williams cult hit, Lisa Frankenstein.
Hulu has the debut of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's 13th season of American Horror Story, which they have insisted will not be the last season. Not much is known about this season yet, even though a teaser trailer has been released, except for a cast list and a list of returning characters, as the series is set to premiere on September 25. They are definitely keeping things under wraps.
