After he made a hit with last year’s robo-thriller Companion, Drew Hancock has found his next film. Deadline reports that Lily James will lead Seasons, a new horror thriller based on a viral short story about a couple who accidentally buys a haunted plot of land, with Hancock set to direct.
Formerly known as My Wife and I Bought a Ranch, the new film began life as a viral post on the subreddit r/nosleep, a place for writers to post short horror stories, written by Matt and Harrison Query. The story was eventually adapted into a full length novel, and is now hitting the big screen, with Hancock directing from his own script. Per Deadline, the film’s description is as follows:
Seasons follows a husband and wife who buy their dream ranch, only to discover the land is alive with ancient spirits, and survival means submitting to increasingly disturbing rituals with each turn of the season.
Seasons is produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine for 21 Laps, Jason Blum and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, Scott Glassgold for 12:01 Films, and Dan Cohen. The film is the third collaboration between 21 Laps and Atomic Monster, who produced the recent hit Backrooms, also based on a viral Internet story. (Are Reddit posts the new book-to-movie adaptations? Maybe so.)
James previously starred in the horror comedy spoof Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as well as the 2020 remake of Rebecca. While her horror credits remain slim, she’s also set to star in a remake of the action thriller Cliffhanger, as well as Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo and Subversion.
No release date has been announced for Seasons. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
