It's been just over a year since the late, great David Lynch passed away, but it looks like we could soon be blessed with more of his incredible creativity posthumously.
Back in June 2025, frequent Lynch collaborator and producer Sabrina Sutherland confirmed that before passing, the legendary auteur had pitched a limited series to Netflix titled Unrecorded Night, which Sutherland describes as โprobably the best thing he ever did” – incredibly exciting news given that Lynch's filmography was full of nothing short of masterpieces.
Sutherland also teased that Lynch's regular players, including Kyle McLachlan (Twin Peaks), Laura Dern (Inland Empire) and Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive), probably would have been involved in the show in some way.
Tragically, following Lynch's passing in January 2025, it looked likeย Unrecorded Night was going to be lost to time. However, Lynch's daughter, filmmaker and author Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer), recently took to her official account on the David Lynch sub-Reddit to reveal to fans that the scripts for Unrecorded Night could still see the light of day, albeit in a different format than originally intended:
Unrecorded Night scripts are likely to be published by myself and my siblings as a way to offer what could not be realized, to those who would have loved it. I beg everyone to wait for this release and not hunt down what will likely be unauthorized versions and would soil the beautiful work Dad created. Like many millions of people, we are great fans of our fatherโs work, and wish to see it shared and celebrated in every good way. We know there is a wanting, and we feel the need to fulfill Dadโs gifts as best as possible.
According to Reddit user upfrontboogie, this news was also confirmed by Sutherland at a recent screening of Lost Highway at London's BFI Southbank.
So what exactly isย Unrecorded Night about? Details remain scarce and mysterious , in true Lynch form, but in a previous interview with The Film Stage, Twin Peaks Season 3 cinematographer Peter Deming shared details of the show's format:
Itโs definitely its own original thingโฆ It was going to be a lot of episodes, because David really liked what he called โthe continuing story.โโฆ Twin Peaks: The Return, we werenโt really sure how many episodes there were going to be until it got into post-production, because it wasnโt really written that way; it was written as a 550-page film. So how that was sliced and diced really was a post-production question. Unrecorded Night was the same way. It took me three sittings to read it because it was so thick, but it was definitely not Twin Peaks. It was definitely a really interestingโฆ mystery, I would say.
