The MonsterVerse continues to expand with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 arriving on Apple TV+ later this month. Taking place in the same universe as movies like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the show continues to further explore this world full of giant beasts and the humans who must contend with their existence. This season, both Kong and Godzilla must unite to take on an even bigger threat, the mysterious Titan X. But is Titan X actually a classic monster from Godzillaโ€™s past?ย

Apple recently released a new trailer for Monarch season 2, which you can watch right here. It features our best look yet at Titan X, but the monster is still somewhat obscured and isnโ€™t referred to by any other name. Some of the glimpses of the gigantic beast, however, might raise some eyebrows for longtime fans of the franchise. Thatโ€™s because Titan X looks at least a little bit like Biollante.ย

The above images showcase Titan X duking it out with Kong and chasing Kurt Russellโ€™s Lee Shaw. That head and those teeth might look awfully familiar to anyone who has seen 1989โ€™s Godzilla vs. Biollante, which just got a 4K release from Criterion last year. For comparisonโ€™s sake and for those who may need a refresher, hereโ€™s Biollante in her final form.ย

Biollante was created by a scientist using DNA from his lost daughter, a rose plant and some of Godzillaโ€™s DNA. What could possibly go wrong? The result was a gargantuan, powerful plant monster and quite possibly one of the most impressive demonstrations of practical creature effects ever put to film. Biollante has only ever appeared in that one movie. Itโ€™s high time she made a comeback. Is that time now?ย

There are things to consider. For one, Monarch is positioning Titan X as some sort of ocean-dwelling, god-like creature. That doesnโ€™t quite line up with Biollanteโ€™s history, but she was more than capable of getting around in the water. Legendary and the creators of the show could certainly be taking some liberties. Itโ€™s also entirely possible that any resemblance is just some combination of coincidence and wishful thinking.ย

Whether or not itโ€™s actually Biollante or genuinely a new Titan? We shall see. What we know for sure is that this isnโ€™t the only shot at a Biollante comeback. Godzilla Minus Zero is set to be released in theaters in November of this year. Then, in March of 2027, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is coming to a theater near you. Either way, kaiju fans are eatinโ€™ good. The synopsis for Monarch season 2 reads as follows:ย

โ€œSeason two will pick up with the fate of Monarch โ€” and the world โ€” hanging in the balance. The dramatic saga reveals buried secrets that reunite our heroes (and villains) on Kongโ€™s Skull Island, and a new, mysterious village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea. The ripple effects of the past make waves in the present day, blurring the bonds between family, friend and foe โ€” all with the threat of a titan event on the horizon.โ€
