While America might make the most zombie films, we’re hardly the only country that does so. Case in point: the trailer for Zona Merah: Dead City, a new Indonesian film based on the series of the same name, and billed as the largest zombie movie ever made in the country.

Co-directed by Sidharta Tata and Fajar Martha Santosa, Zona Merah: Dead City stars Aghni Haque, Andri Mashadi, Devano, Maria Theodore, Lukman Sardi, Bryan Domani, Shindy Huang, Myesha Lin, Derby Romero, and Luna Maya. The film’s synopsis is as follows:

A deadly virus spreads across the city of Rimbalaya, turning infected people into the living dead. Maya is a survivor hiding in an evacuation camp with her younger sibling and friends. But when the camp is overrun by the undead, they are forced to flee and fight for their lives. With danger closing in, they must survive not only the attacks of the undead, but also the people who suspect they are infected.

As political tensions rise, false information spreads to keep the public calm, making the situation even worse. With trust breaking down and danger everywhere, Maya and her group must find a way out before it is too late. Will they find help and escape the red zone, or will they become the next victims of the outbreak?

“From day one, we knew we had to go all out for ‘Zona Merah: Dead City,’” Tata said. “We filmed across three cities in Indonesia, worked with hundreds of extras, and built incredible set pieces.”

The film spins off from Zona Merah, a popular series that premiered on the Indonesian streaming service Vidio in 2024. After amassing over 30 million views on the service, the film was commissioned, taking its zombie infestation from the country into the city.

Zona Merah: Dead City releases in Indonesian cinemas on January 14. No US release date has been announced. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
