Check your backseat, because something terrifying is coming to streaming. Paramount+ announced that the road trip horror Passenger arrives on the streamer next week, bringing André Øvredal’s latest film to life from the comfort of your home.

Directed by Øvredal from a script by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess, Passenger stars Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell, and Melissa Leo. The film’s synopsis is as follows:

Passenger follows a young couple who, after witnessing a gruesome highway accident, soon realize they did not leave the crash scene alone. A demonic presence called the Passenger has latched onto them, and won't stop until it claims them both, turning their van life adventure into a nightmare.

In our review of the film, Todd Gilchrist said thatØvredal technically does little more than dozens of movies about ghosts have done before…but even if this feels like a film squarely manufactured for the popcorn crowd, he makes those experiences fun to watch unfold rather than infuriating. The characters may not quite be smart, but they seldom make stupid decisions, so viewers tingle with anticipation… sometimes horror can simply be scary and fun and not need to transgress the boundaries of art or human trauma, and that’s what this film does.”

Passenger is produced by Jenny Hinkey, Nathan Samdahl, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro and Andrew Lary, Walter Hamada, and Gary Dauberman. The film joins a host of original horror films produced by Paramount, including the Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A, Significant Other starring Maika Monroe, and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. Also available on the service are all of the Smile, Scream, and A Quiet Place films, among many others.

Passenger arrives on Paramount+ on August 20.
