Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna in Season 4 of STRANGER THINGS.

Genre fare has infiltrated the 2022 Emmys (shhh don’t tell them it’s horror!) Some of our favorite entertainment in the last year has been recognized in this year’s nominations, with Squid Game and Stranger Things dominating the scene. Yellowjackets and What We Do In The Shadows are also getting some Emmy love.

Squid Game, Stranger Things and Yellowjackets have all been nominated for Drama Series, while What We Do In The Shadows is up for Comedy Series and Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. Netflix’s Death And Robots is also being recognized, nominated for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program.

Squid Game ran heavily through the list of nominations, aside from making history as the first non-English language series to be nominated for an Emmy, Squid Game didn’t come to break the barrier with one nomination, they pretty came for the whole damn bag. Squid Game nominations include Lead Actor In A Drama Series Lee Jung-jae, Supporting Actor In A Drama Series Park Hae-soo and Oh Yeong-su, Supporting Actress In A Drama Series Jung Ho-yeon, Guest Actress In A Drama Series Lee You-mi, Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More), Outstanding Cinematography For A Single-Camera Series (One Hour), Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series and Outstanding Stunt Performance. Phew, that’s a long (and well deserved) list!

Yellowjackets continues to be an obsession around these parts, so we were happy to see nominations for Lead Actress In A Drama Series Melanie Lynskey, Supporting Actress In A Drama Series Christina Ricci, Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series (you can say that again!) Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series, and Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series.

While film Twitter may never forgive the Academy for not nominating Toni Collette’s performance in Hereditary, we can appreciate her recognition for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, The Staircase. And if you’re in the mood for some entirely disturbing and heinous behind-the-scenes photos of Mike Marino’s eerie FX work (corpse Collette!) we’ve got you covered.

ST-Vecna-header

No surprise here, Stranger Things FX work was nominated for both Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup. Other Stranger Things nominations include Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program (One Hour Or More), Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series, and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series. If you’d like a look at bringing Vecna to life, check out our two-part interview with Makeup artist (and Emmy nominee) Barrie Gower.

Ricci, Lynskey and Collette hives rise up! We’re ready to see Vecna styled to the nines, walking that red carpet come awards season. Big congrats to all the nominees and all the creators bringing our favorite shows to life.
