It’s nice to have a friend – and even nicer to watch that friend succeed. After slaying the box office on her opening weekend by blowing away projections with a $30.2M start (taking the second spot in U.S. and Canada) and $45M worldwide, the good news keeps coming for fans of Gerard Johnstone’s mini monstrosity.

In an exclusive released yesterday, Deadline revealed that ‘a sequel is already in early development’ for the James Wan and Blumhouse-produced sensation. This news will hardly come as a surprise to anyone following the film’s success; from the TikTok vitality of her now-iconic sway dance (1.3billion hashtag views and counting), to the continual clapbacks on her official Twitter account, M3GAN is the talk of the town.

Screenwriter Akela Cooper (Malignant) has also revealed via an interview with the Los Angeles Times that her original script was ‘way gorier’. The theatrical cut of M3GAN is PG-13 a move that has divided some horror fans. In her full statement, Cooper reassured gore-hounds that an unrated cut should be on the way:

“No shade to Universal, love them, and I understand that once the trailer went viral, teenagers got involved and you want them to be able to see it. There should be an unrated version at some point […] I heard it is on the books. But yes, it was way gorier. Her body count in the script was higher than in the movie.”

M3GAN stars Alison Williams (Get Out) and Violet McGraw (The Haunting of Hill House), with Amie Donald and Jenna Davis portraying the physicality and voice of M3GAN respectively.
