Today, after months of speculation, James Gunn and Peter Safran (now the official keyholders to Warner Bros.’ DC cinematic universe) finally revealed a portion of their plan for the next few years’ worth of DC projects. The lineup represents the first chapter in this plan, one they’ve taken to calling “Gods and Monsters.” Lucky for us, they didn’t forget the monsters.

Indeed, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn and Safran’s plans call for new movies and TV shows featuring Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and, unexpectedly, The Authority … as well as a brand-new horror film based on Swamp Thing. This project is said to close out the first chapter of Gunn and Safran’s overall plan, which likely means we won’t be seeing it for some time.

But what an exciting development! Swamp Thing has, of course, made his way to screens both big and small in the past (most recently in a very short-lived TV series brought to us by none other than James Wan), but we’re guessing this iteration of the character will be quite unlike most of the versions we’ve seen in the past. That they’re calling this a “horror film” this far in advance should register as something of a clue.

Of the many projects announced by Gunn and Safran today, the new Swamp Thing is accompanied by the least amount of detailed information: beyond the genre they’re aiming for and the fact that they’re doing it, we don’t know anything else about the film – there’s no director attached, no word on who might star, what corner of Swamp Thing mythology the project might be tackling – but obviously we’ll be keeping close tabs on this one, and will keep you informed as further updates roll in.

Stay tuned.
