Last night, Cabinet of Curiosities mastermind Guillermo del Toro hopped on Instagram and casually dropped a snippet of test footage from his long-gestating (and as yet unmade) adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness. For years we’ve been wondering what this thing might’ve looked like in action, and now we know: it would’ve looked gorgeous.

Take a look at this:

Pretty stunning, right?

For those who might not be aware: roughly a decade ago, del Toro was working on an At The Mountains of Madness adaptation, with James Cameron onboard as an executive producer and Tom Cruise in the lead role. Universal was into their pitch, but somewhere along the line the studio got cold feet – $200 million for a hard-R horror epic? Even with all that talent involved, it simply seemed too risky. The film went unmade, all involved went on to other projects, and fans have been left hoping that some other studio might come along and bankroll the damn thing ever since. So far, no dice.

Ah, well. At least we’ve got the footage above to gawk at. And who knows? Maybe the excitement surrounding this test footage will get the attention of a deeply-pocketed studio. Certainly worked for Deadpool.
