In what can only be described as a better-late-than-never scenario, LEGO has finally unveiled its first-ever official Godzilla set. And it’s fittingly epic given that we’re talking about the King of the Monsters here.

The set is based on Legendary’s MonsterVerse Godzilla, which includes movies like Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The LEGO Ideas Godzilla set arrives later this month on November 27. It’s a towering, 5,363-piece tribute to the King and the largest LEGO Ideas model ever launched. The built model stands over 27.5 inches tall when posed with its Heat Ray. The LEGO Minifigure reaches only as high as Godzilla’s ankle, for scale. The set retails for $449.99.

Details include textured scaly skin, jagged dorsal fins and a sweeping tail. The figure also includes adjustable shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers, letting fans pose the King of the Monsters in different ways. Builders can also swap the tongue for the included Heat Ray element to recreate Godzilla’s signature upward roar.
This official Godzilla set was first confirmed last year and was submitted by New York-based Fan Designer Matthew Esposito via the LEGO Ideas crowdsourcing platform. Once published, it reached the landmark 10,000-vote threshold to be considered for production. After the LEGO Ideas Review Board's rigorous selection process, it was approved. Esposito had this to say about it:
“Building LEGO Godzilla was a real passion project. I’ve loved both LEGO building and Godzilla for years, so I wanted to capture his shape, scale and character as accurately as I could. The head was definitely the biggest challenge, but seeing the model come together and eventually reach 10,000 supporters after more than two years was incredible. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported the project and helped make this dream a reality.”

“We were thrilled to partner with the LEGO Group to bring our titan to life in brick form,” added Amber Sheppo, SVP, Consumer Products & Partnerships at Legendary Entertainment. “From Matthew’s original vision to this truly epic creation, the LEGO Group has been an incredible partner every step of the way.”
It's a very big time for the franchise, broadly speaking. This upcoming weekend sees the release of the R-rated Godzilla Minus Zero, which has earned rave reviews. Next year will also see the release of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the latest entry in the MonsterVerse. Meanwhile, IDW has been publishing a ton of comics tied to the so-called Kai-Sei era of Godzilla, which have been very well received.
