Cults tend to make for compelling cinematic interpretations, but an extra layer of creepy drapes over something when itโs based on real events. Such is the case with this summerโs God is a Bullet, which is based on Boston Teranโs best-selling novel of the same name and is, indeed, inspired by real-life happenings. The folks at XYZ Films have released a new trailer for the film ahead of its release next month, and it boasts an A-list cast with plenty of unsettling vibes to go around. Check it out.
So yeah, some seriously dirty, creepy vibes here. Everything is set in motion when Nikolaj Coster-Waldauโs character has his life upended by the cult at the center of this story. They are all covered in tattoos and, most certainly, up to no good. He teams up with a survivor of said cult, played by Maika Monroe of It Follows fame. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx is also in the mix, and we rarely get to see him in something so downright bleak. Explosions, a deadly path of revenge, this movie kind of seems to have it all. The official synopsis reads as follows:
โThe film follows detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who finds his ex-wife murdered and his daughter kidnapped by an insidious cult. Bob takes matters into his own hands and infiltrates the secretive cult to try to save his daughter. With the help of the cultโs only female victim escapee, Case Hardin (Maika Monroe), Bob and Case go down the rabbit hole with The Ferryman (Jamie Foxx) to save his daughter and find closure for Case from the cult โ and its maniacal leader (Karl Glusman) – that took so much away from her.โ

The rather impressive ensemble cast also includes the likes of January Jones (Mad Men), Paul Johansson (Van Helsing), David Thornton (John Q), Jonathan Tucker (The Ruins), Ethan Suplee (Evolution) and Brendan Sexton III (Donโt Breathe 2). Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog) is in the directorโs chair for this one. Itโs honestly hard to imagine that the same guy that made The Notebook is behind the camera here, but get you a guy who can do both. Cassavetes, it turns out, has been trying to make this film for a long time, saying the following:
โIโve been trying to tell this great story for the last 18+ years. Itโs tough, violent, has two flawed and fantastic characters, and absolutely pulls no punches. I love it! Thereโs nothing else out there like it, not even close!โ
God is a Bullet is set to hit theaters on June 23.
