Every horror fan remembers the gateway story that got them into the genre—not quite as scary as their current tastes, but enough to hook them for life — and we’ve got our eyes on the next generation’s version. FANGORIA is excited to partner with Oni Press to reveal an exclusive excerpt from Haunted Comic Club, a new middle grade graphic novel hitting shelves this week.

Written by Eisner Award nominee Josh Tierney, Haunted Comic Club features art by Caitlin Soliman and letters by Frank Cvetkovic, and spans a whopping 240 pages of full-color gateway horror. The book’s synopsis is as follows:

Will and Anita are two lonely tweens who find themselves alone together in the art room of the local after school club. After gushing over each other’s work—Will’s writing and Anita’s art—the two team up to make their own comic about a local urban legend—a teen counselor who haunts the club after a tragic demise. Anita and Will research the ghost and develop their story, forming a strong friendship. But can they overcome bullies at the club and changes at home to become great friends and collaborators?

Tierney previously worked with Oni Press to write the manga version of Rick and Morty, and is also known for stories like Warm Blood, Hunters, and Spera. He previously collaborated with Soliman on Iris Complex, a webtoon comic originally published in 2023. Haunted Comic Club is just the latest in a long line of horror-adjacent comics from Oni, which is also publishing new Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Adventure Time, and Archie in Hell issues this year.

Haunted Comic Club hits shelves on October 7. Check out our exclusive excerpt below:
