Top Horror Movies Streaming This Week

Who knew that getting everything that you think you wanted was so frightening? Writer and director Curry Barker did. He is an actor, comedian, and co-creator of the comedy YouTube channel “that's a bad idea” with Cooper Tomlinson. While people were initially skeptical of YouTube creators as filmmakers, films by Danny and Michael Philippou, Barker and Kane Parsons, have caught the zeitgeist and become some of the most popular and critically acclaimed horror films since the 2022 release of the Philippou Brothers' Talk to Me.

Perhaps it is the inherent yet subtle connection between horror and humor that has made comedians so good at creating some of the genre's biggest and scariest hits in the last few years, but there's nothing wrong with laughs among the screams.

Obsession is now streaming on Peacock.

Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell, and Melissa Leo star in this film about the dangers of the lonely road. In it, a demonic entity called The Passenger, which attaches itself to unwary travellers who stop by the wrecks caused by the monster killing its prey.  The young couple notices a distinctive mark of three claws on their van after fleeing from just such a wreck on the side of a highway and knows that something is very wrong.

While the film did not obviously break the bank at the box office, it has done very well on streaming, with five weeks spent in the top ten. With a budget of $15 million and a worldwide gross of $31 million, it is a low-key success in 2026.

Passenger is now streaming on Paramount+.

Paul W.S. Anderson, the director of the cult film Event Horizon, was the first director to make a movie based on Resident Evil, the video game series. Before Resident Evil, he directed Mortal Kombat, which was a successful video game adaptation, which led to him being hired for a second video game film. Resident Evil is considered a prequel to the games and does not have any of the characters in the video game series in it.

Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon star in the film, which spawned a successful franchise of six films that concluded in 2016 with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

Resident Evil (2002) is now streaming on Xumo Play.  It's free to watch with ads.

Horror fans are going back to Zach Cregger's catalog of horror movies at home, either before watching his new horror hit or maybe after visiting the movie theater. 2022's Barbarian was Cregger's first movie as a solo director and is a film that shocked audiences with its bold twists and turns. Yes, no one was really prepared for what happened in Barbarian, and the film caused a sensation that included many Airbnb renters getting creeped out while on vacation.

Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long star in the movie that propelled Zach Cregger to the A-list of directors among scary movie fans and studio executives alike.  It's a good idea to revisit a filmmaker's previous movies; it's fun, it can give you context, and you can see how their talent has grown and changed. The streamers who made sure they had Cregger's previous films available for the fans made a great choice.

Barbarian is now streaming on Fubo and HBO Max. The film will leave HBO Max on September 30.

Zach Cregger's third horror film, Resident Evil, has infected the box office and is the number one movie worldwide this week.  Despite naysayers, the second collaboration between Cregger and his most loyal cast member from Weapons, Austin Abrams, has not only done blockbuster numbers but, more importantly, has succeeded wildly as a new creative direction for the series and film.

In Weapons, Abrams, playing an unhoused, drug-addicted petty thief, is one of the standouts among a very good ensemble cast. He was also the only original member of the original cast, which included Pedro Pascal and Renate Reinsve, who stuck with the project because he loved the character and trusted Cregger. That faith is now paying huge dividends for both Cregger and Abrams, showing that loyalty does matter.

Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.  Zach Cregger's Weapons will leave Prime on September 23.

John Carpenter's third independent film and his first overt horror movie, Halloween, is an evergreen among fans of horror flicks. Not only can you watch it at any time of the year, but it's also even more frightful fun to watch during scary season. Home viewers aren't even waiting for October to arrive this year; the streaming services have it available, and the slasher that arguably started it all has a firm grasp on its spot on the top horror movies streaming this week list.

Jamie Lee Curtis, P. J. Soles, Charles Cyphers, Kyle Richards, Brian Andrews, Nancy Loomis, Nick Castle as the physical representation of Michael Myers or The Shape, and English actor Donald Pleasence star in this terrifying classic that never grows old.

Halloween (1978) is now streaming on AMC+, Fubo, and Shudder.

One of the most famous folk horror films, directed in 1973 by English filmmaker Robin Hardy, is The Wicker Man. Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Christopher Lee star in the beautiful and disturbing film that gave horror some of its most arresting images of terror. Based on the novel Ritual by actor and novelist David Pinner, it was adapted by Anthony Schaffer, who also wrote Alfred Hitchcock's film Frenzy.

The film follows Sergeant Neil Howie, a policeman, who comes to a remote Hebridean island in search of a missing young girl after receiving an anonymous letter telling him she was in danger.  He finds an island full of people who are pagans and claim to know nothing about the girl. A stern Christian, Sergeant Howie, is very suspicious and comes to believe that the islanders might be engaging in human sacrifice.

The Wicker Man is now streaming on Fawesome, Kanopy, Prime, and Tubi. The film is leaving Tubi on September 30 and Fawesome on October 2.

After a couple of weeks away, Genki Kawamura's psychological horror movie, Exit 8, has popped back into the top ten. It is based on a video game, The Exit 8, by Kotake Create, and is about a man who slowly realizes that he is caught in a loop in a familiar train station. He also realizes that unless he pays attention to the clues, called anomalies, he may never escape. The character, The Lost Man, has a long time to think about his troubles and how he has lived his life as the situation grows more desperate.

None of the characters have names, but the cast includes Kazunari Ninomiya as The Lost Man, Yamato Kochi as The Walking Man, Naru Asanuma as The Boy, Kotone Hanase as The High School Girl, and Nana Komatsu as The Woman

Exit 8 is now streaming on AMC+ and Shudder.

Juliette Gariépy, Laurie Babin, Elisabeth Locas, Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, Natalie Tannous, Pierre Chagnon, and Guy Thauvette star in Pascal Plante's fascinating and disquieting film about how human beings become obsessed with those accused of committing hideous crimes. What drives the people who attend high-profile trials to support people they don't even know, but somehow believe in?

True crime podcasts and TV shows have been very popular for a long time, and the practice of attending trials in person as “fans” of the accused has been going on for even longer, so it makes sense that the horror genre has been used to explore this curious human trait. Red Rooms premiered at the Fantasia Festival to critical acclaim that is considered “universal.”

Red Rooms is now streaming on AMC+, Prime, and Shudder.

After three weeks away, the fungus from space has rejoined the top ten. Adapted from his novel by screenwriter (Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, Disclosure Day) and director David Koepp (Stir of Echoes), English director Jonny Campbell (Alien Autopsy) directed the horror comedy. It follows the trail of the wreckage of the space station Skylab that was unwisely picked up by an Australian farmer.

It's another lesson on why you should probably leave space junk alone, and it stars Georgina Campbell, Joe Keery, and Liam Neeson, with Sosie Bacon, Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Ellora Torchia, and Richard Brake.
