Magic: The Gathering's upcoming set Reality Fracture is based all around Jace Beleren, who was one of the multiverse’s heroes. But now he's become the multiverse’s ultimate sad boy, determined to create a new reality without the trauma and suffering of the current Multiverse: an Echoverse. During all this, his lover, Varaska, left him when she didn't agree with his plan, so he created a new one in his Echoverse. Jace is the ultimate emo mage, and everyone has to suffer for it. He’s so sad that he watches his new reality unfold from the side as the action happens. He needs a chair, imho

This new set is steeped in MtG lore and is what designer Mark Rosewater calls a “what if” set. All of the original planeswalkers are back in their classic forms but also in an opposite new Jace reality version. But it's not all wizards, mages and magic. We are also getting some new monsters, and a few of them debuted this week.

The big stompy elder dinosaur Ghalta is back as Ghalta the Unstoppable, and much like a previous version, this spell costs X less under certain conditions. The rare Ghalta, Primal Hunger, costs X less to cast, where X is the total power of creatures you control. The new uncommon “Ghalta the Unstoppable” is largely the same, but the back half is “where X is the greatest power among creatures you control.” So it's not as quick to cast, but in a deck full of big creatures, it's hitting the board quicker than you think and only costs one green mana instead of two, in addition to its colorless cost. Both versions have trample but Ghalta the Unstoppable also gives all of your other creatures trample. For people who love to play big creatures, this card is easily going to slot into your decks.

And in Jace's reality, he’s created the opposite version of Ghalta: a triceratops-like dinosaur that focuses on protecting and defending. Ghalta the Immovable costs X less for the greatest toughness instead of strength, and swaps toughness and power when attacking. I'm not sure how many cards with defender are in the set, but in Commander decks that play with those cards, this is an easy addition.

The last card I want to discuss is the mythic rarity Chimera Horror, Hexhaven Invigorator. Costing you four green mana, it's a 6/6 creature with vigilance and “whenever this creature is dealt damage, you may search your library for up to that many land cards, put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.” Lord knows green needed more ways to mana ramp. Throw an equipment on Hexhaven Invigorator that gives it indestructible, and it seems like this card has a lot of possibilities. Not only are you getting more lands, but you’re also thinning out your deck to hopefully draw the cards you need to win the game.

Hexhaven Invigorator comes as a normal art card in standard and traditional foil but also comes with alternate borderless shattered mirror art that can be non-foil, foil and facet foil.

Back at MagicCon, there was a tease of some plant-based horror akin to 2018's Annihilation. Unfortunately, no cards revolving around that debuted; hopefully we get an update soon.

Reality Fracture is looking to be one of the better sets of the year, and chatter online has players excited for what has already been debuted. The set releases on October 2, 2026.
