This past weekend in Amsterdam, Magic: The Gathering announced three in-universe sets coming to the TCG in 2027. Unfortunately, none of the sets are horror-based like previous sets (Duskmourn or Innistrad), but we are getting one set that looks like it's going to be filled with giant monsters, aka kaiju.
The first set announced that will be released on February 5, 2027, is Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. This is not the kaiju set but one that takes place entirely underwater in a new realm for the multiverse. They didn't show off any cards from the upcoming set; the same goes for the other two, but we did get a look at some pretty neat concept art. This won't be a horror set, but I bet we get some really cool creatures that lean into aquatic horror. Hopefully we hear more about this set in November at MagicCon Atlanta.
The second set announced is a return to a fan-favorite plane, Kamigawa. This new set is Kamigawa Titanbreach, releasing June 4, 2027. In this set, the planes of Kamigawa and Ikoria are crashing together, resulting in a mesh of mechs, ninjas, and giant monsters. They never said kaiju and kept saying “giant monsters,” but they aren't fooling anyone, we're getting kaiju.
For fans of giant monster movies like Godzilla and Pacific Rim, this is a set to keep an eye on. Based on what they have revealed of the story, I am guessing this is more in line with Pacific Rim than Godzilla. In Pacific Rim, kaiju emerge from an interdimensional portal in the ocean to wreak havoc on Earth. Which sounds kind of like what's happening with the clash between Kamigawa and Ikoria. But I'm only speculating.
Since we are a little under a year from this set being released, we don't know a whole lot, but hopefully by the end of the year we get more details as Magic returns to the neon-soaked world of Kamigawa. But check out the preview video shown at MagicCon to get a taste of what's to come.
The last set announced is one that MtG lore fans have been wanting for some time, and that is a return to Zhalfir, a plane that has been part of Magic’s history for a long time.
Stephanie Cheung, the Lead Art Director, described it as “This is a world that is powered by the light and the magic of five suns, so there is never night here. And this is contrasted with the spirit realm, where it is full of mystery, is full of danger, is where your ancestors and spirits go, and it is a world of eternal darkness.”
While this set is fantasy, there was mention of a lot of monsters and bizarre creatures that we will get to look forward to. The Zhalfir set releases October 1, 2027.
As of right now, we are only getting high-level looks at these three new in-universe sets, but hopefully, towards the end of 2026, we will get new information.
