Top Horror Movies Streaming This Week

The chorus of voices calling for Inde Navarette to compete for acting awards for her breakout performance as Nikki has been heard because, according to Variety, Focus Features will be behind a campaign for Navarette as a best actress candidate in the upcoming awards season. However, Navarette is not the only person from Obsession who will get a campaign. Writer, director, and editor Curry Barker will also be a candidate in those categories.

According to the article, Focus Features intends to submit every candidate for every category who would be eligible for Obsession, including Michael Johnston as Best Actor, Cooper Tomlinson and Andy Richter as Best Supporting Actor, and Megan Lawless as Best Supporting Actress. It seems like 2026's first horror Oscar contenders have been announced, and we no longer have to wonder if there will be a fright film competing during awards season.

Van life on the road and the emptiness of the highways and byways of the rural and suburban United States turn into a nightmare for a young couple who just want to enjoy life outside of the big city. In director André Øvredal's newest film, Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell, and Melissa Leo star as the young couple throwing caution to the wind and a veteran of life on the road as they discover a demonic danger lurking in the night.

It's a film where the high-priced rent of New York City is less scary than the creature that follows them once they stop to help other motorists who have had an accident. It is a creature that can change your perception of reality, which is something that is terrifying. Make sure you lock those car doors when you are out on the road, but given the powers of the creature, that might not help. Eek!

Passenger is now streaming on Paramount+.

It is possible that people can really relate to the dilemma facing the characters in The Last House after Covid. The feeling of being trapped in your home, and the raised stakes of not just being forbidden to leave, but being unable to leave, could goose the fear just a bit more. Wagner Moura and Greta Lee star in the film directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Matthew Robinson.

The film has hit its fourth week in the top ten and shows no sign of slowing down. While it hasn't gotten raves from critics, horror fans are clicking on play at home to explore this scary story.  While other Netflix streaming-only releases have only managed to get on this list for a week or two, The Last House seems to have real staying power.

The Long Walk is in for the long haul as it has hit eight and a half months in the top horror movies streaming this week. From its quiet release on Starz, with no fanfare, the film still immediately went top ten and marched right into first place. Since then, and with its addition to HBO Max, The Long Walk has continued to score big each week with streaming fans and is approaching the first anniversary of its release in theaters.

Directed by Francis Lawrence and written by JT Mollner, The Long Walk stars the Independent Spirit Award-winning cast of Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill.

The Long Walk is now streaming on HBO Max.

This is the second week Insidious has captured a spot on this list; it doesn't seem like a coincidence, since the movie improved its standing since last week and has moved up to number five from its position last week.  Really great work for a film that is sixteen years old, and while it does have a new film in the series in theaters, the film has already been in theaters for two weeks, since August 21.

The film stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye and Barbara Hershey as members of the Lambert family whose world is invaded by demons from another plane. The story of the Lamberts was so interesting to horror fans that they followed the characters through the original and three sequels. It was directed and co-edited by James Wan, and the script was written by Leigh Whannell, who also has a role in the film.

Insidious is now streaming on MGM+.

The French Canadian film Red Rooms, directed by Pascal Plante and starring Juliette Gariépy, Laurie Babin, Elisabeth Locas, Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, Natalie Tannous, Pierre Chagnon, and Guy Thauvette, is still fascinating to audience members as it remains in the top ten for a third week.

While it is most likely that the film has done even better since it was added to Prime, it has received excellent notices from critics around the world and has a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  For a film that has been called “evil” in social media reactions, there is definitely something special for those who love to be frightened in Red Rooms.

Speaking of being trapped in a place that is normally not a prison, Exit 8 is the second film on the list in which characters cannot escape from a place that is usually a comfortable place to be. Exit 8 also has an element of liminal space, because the train station, a very ordinary place where the lead character, The Lost Man, walks through on a daily basis, slowly becomes much more sinister as time passes.

Directed by Genki Kawamura and released by Toho, it stars Kazunari Ninomiya, Yamato Kochi, Naru Asanuma, Kotone Hanase, and Nana Komatsu. Toho is the legendary Japanese film studio that created the Godzilla franchise and the Kaiju monster subgenre and distributed the films of the legendary director Akira Kurosawa.

Exit 8 is now streaming on AMC+ and Shudder.

Horror comedy keeps its hold on this week's top ten with Cold Storage, a film that starts with the crash of Skylab, which was a real-life event, since the space station fell to Earth in 1979 over Western Australia, and a man in the town of Esperance brought pieces of the fallen space station to a San Francisco newspaper to win a prize.  That's where the narrative separates from real life to the story of Cold Storage.

Georgina Campbell, Joe Keery, Liam Neeson, Sosie Bacon, Dame Vanessa Redgrave, and Ellora Torchia star in this alternate version of the Skylab crash landing that has 100% more parasitic space fungus invading Earth.  British filmmaker Johnny Campbell directed the film, which was adapted by screenwriter David Koepp from his novel of the same name.

Cold Storage is now streaming on Hoopla, Kanopy, and MGM+.

Ryan Coogler's first horror film can now celebrate another month spent in the top ten, despite the film having been available on streaming for a year and four weeks.  This means that Sinners has broken the record on FANGORIA's list, which was formerly held by The Substance, which was in the top ten for a year and two weeks. The time spent on the countdown is not unbroken, but it still counts.

The film, which was written, directed, and produced by Coogler, stars Academy Award winner Michael Jordon, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell,  Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Academy Award nominees Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo.

Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max.

There is some news for Aunt Gladys fans: the writer and director of Weapons, Zach Cregger, has confirmed that he will not be writing the script for the prequel that focuses on the fan-favorite character. Cregger says that he developed the story with the writer, but that Zach Shields is writing the script alone, according to an interview with Cregger from Deadline.

Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, who stars in Cregger's next film Resident Evil, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Academy Award winner Amy Madigan star in Weapons, which continues to rack up streaming views on HBO Max and Prime. It will leave Prime on September 20.
