The wilderness is scary enough as it is without any additional help — you know, lions, tigers, bears, etc. So adding a serial killer definitely doesn’t help, but that’s the situation Charlize Theron is stuck in in the trailer for Apex, a new thriller coming to Netflix next month.

Directed by Baltasar Kormákur from a script by Jeremy Robbins, Apex stars Theron as a grieving woman who embarks into the Australian wilderness to test her limits and forget about her pain. But when she encounters a mysterious man (Taron Egerton) who turns out to be a deadly predator, she ends up dealing with a whole different kind of suffering.

This isn’t the first time Netflix has put out a cat-and-mouse thriller like this, though maybe the first that also includes a wilderness element, which Theron reveals she worked with professional rock climber Beth Rodden to train for. There’s plenty to be scared of in the “existential” new film, including a villain who sees himself as exactly in the right, according to Egerton.

“In my version of the story, Ben is the hero,” he told Netflix. “Everything has to make sense for him. So part of my job is to craft a spiritual code for him.”

Apex is produced by Theron and Kormákur, along with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, Ian Bryce, A.J. Dix, and Beth Kono. The film is Theron’s first horror-adjacent project since she lent her voice to the animated Addams Family films, and Egerton’s second film with Netflix following the 2024 film Carry-On.

Apex hits Netflix on April 24. Thanks to the streamer, local fans can also register for tickets to attend the film’s premiere in New York City on April 22. For more information on that, you can check out this website, and watch the trailer above.
