Halloween is behind us but it was a scary one indeed, at least for anyone who happens to own a movie theater or a major Hollywood studio. Thatโs because Halloween weekend was the worst of 2025 so far at the box office, with not a single movie eclipsing the $10 million mark domestically. It was bleak. In and amongst the rubble though, there was a bright spot in the form of Black Phone 2, which crossed a major milestone. Welcome to the $100 million club.ย

Universal and Blumhouseโs Black Phone 2 added another $8.3 million domestically over the weekend, coming in at number one on the charts just ahead of Regretting You ($7.8 million). It was a big of a pillow fight for the crown, to be certain. Be that as it may, director Scott Derricksonโs sequel has now passed the $100 million mark. To date, the film has earned $61.7 million domestically to go with $43.6 million internationally for a running total of $105.3 illion worldwide. It was already Blumhouseโs biggest movie of 2025 but now itโs a certifiable hit.ย
Overall, the domestic box office generated just $50 million during the Halloween frame, a terrible result. Thatโs in no small part because new releases such as Bugonia ($5 million) and the animated Stitch Head ($2 million) did little to entice moviegoers.ย
The sequel once again centers on Finn (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) as they both struggle after their encounter with The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). He has been dead for a few years but when Gwen begins having strange dreams, she convinces Finn to visit a winter camp with her, one that has ties to their family. As they seek to solve a deadly mystery, The Grabber is there waiting for them from beyond the grave.ย
For Blumhouse, itโs a sigh of relief. The house that Jason Blum built is one of the key names in modern horror but the studio has been having a rough go over the past couple of years, with the misses far outweighing the hits. Prior to The Black Phone sequel, Wolf Man, The Woman in the Yard, Drop and especially M3GAN 2.0 had all disappointed greatly at the box office. The Grabber to the rescue, it seems.ย
The sequel carries a $30 million production budget, which is on the higher end for Blumhouse. It proved to be money well spent though. Whether or not Derrickson, writer C. Robert Cargill, author Joe Hill and/or Hawke decide to try and go three for three with Black Phone 3 remains to be seen. Looking ahead, Blumhouse does have hope to finish the year strong as Five Nights at Freddyโs 2 is due to arrive in early December.ย
Meanwhile, Thames is just about the only one in town who had a great weekend, as he is starring in both the number one and number two movies in the country right now. Thames was also the lead in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, which made $636 million globally. We have a movie star on our hands.ย
