Heads up, dark fantasy fans as Titan Comics has something coming your way. The publisher recently announced the upcoming series Dark Souls: Mother of the Mourning, which takes place in the same universe as FromSoftware’s wildly popular and much beloved video game series of the same name. The series is going full-on fantasy/horror and we’ve got the exclusive first look at the book to prove it.
Fango is proud to present the first lettered pages from issue #1 of Mother of the Mourning, which you can check out below. The first issue is due to hit shelves on December 3, with pre-orders open as we speak. The series hails from writer George Mann and artist Maan House. It’s fitting, given that the duo previously worked on the graphic novel Dark Souls: The Willow King.
As we can see, the book feels at home in the universe but it’s notably loaded down with dark, bloody imagery. That’s also evident in the many variant covers for issue #1, which you can check out below. Fantasy is often a great playground for horror storytelling, with Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness, a great many cinematic takes on Frankenstein and The Witch all serving as fine examples. The Dark Souls universe is, evidently, ripe with horror potential as well. As for what we can expect in this new addition to the franchise? The synopsis reads as follows:
“Hope is a fleeting feeling for the Knights of Mourning. But the knightly order are willing to bet everything on their last chance of salvation.
In search of a hero to rekindle the flame, these knights turn to the Mother of Lillies, a soulless mummified saint with legends about her ability to restore balance to the world.
The knights believe that her lost soul will resurrect her and bring them their soughtafter champion to guide them to solace. But madness looms in every knight’s mind and this long-awaited goal might not be what it once seemed…”
Titan is no stranger to horror comics, with the publisher launching Kraken earlier this year. Return to Skull Island and Little Nightmares: Descent to Nowhere also serving as fine examples of the publisher’s work in the genre.
