Trading card games are the bread and butter of the tabletop gaming world, and now, Universal wants a piece of the piece. The studio just announced that it’s partnering with Spin Master to release Hellbreak, a new trading card game that allows players to collect, trade, and battle their favorite Universal Monsters against one another, like the world’s scariest game of Pokémon.

Much like the iconic game where players can collect creatures to battle against one another, Hellbreak will allow players to bring together a team of Universal Monsters from across the studio’s history, pitting them against one another in the “Monster Sandbox,” where they can fight to the bitter end. Specific characters included in the game have not been announced, but Universal says that the game will feature “a stunning array of Universal Pictures’ characters that encompasses genre-defining classics, icons of horror’s late 20th century resurgence and visionaries who continue to shape fear for modern audiences.”

“At a time when fans are craving deeper, more atmospheric experiences, Hellbreak allows us to deliver horror in a frightening new way,” said Universal’s Rafa Macias. “With the rise in popularity of trading card games, and how passionate horror fans are around the world, we saw an opportunity to extend the lore of horror to TCG, working with true masters of the craft, to create a genuinely elevated and chilling gameplay experience.”

Spin Master and Universal are also planning to bring other studios into the fold, roping in more horror icons for ambitious crossovers never before seen in any medium.

Hellbreak was designed to feel dangerous, cinematic, and endlessly replayable,” said Christian T. Petersen, the game’s lead designer. “Every monster, mechanic, and aspect is built to create unforgettable and terrifying moments at the table — the kind players will be talking about long after the match ends.”

Hellbreak is set to hit shelves sometime this fall. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
