Top Horror Movies Streaming This Week

Obsession, one of the scariest successes of 2025, has hit another achievement level on this list. It has held onto the top spot for just over two months in a row. Not surprising for a movie that is that big of a blockbuster, but it still has a way to go before taking the record for the crown as the scary movie that remains at number one for the longest time. Writer, director, and editor Curry Barker is already working on new projects, but the impact of the film is still being felt.

Inde Navaratte, who plays Nikki, and Michael Johnston, who plays Bear, made an appearance on the YouTube talk show Hot Ones, going head to head in a contest to see who can win by telling the truth and eating the least amount of wings doused in extremely hot sauce. That is a challenge that could even scare the most hardcore horror fans; if you've ever caught the show, you know what we mean.

Hang on, Saint Christopher, because André Øvredal's newest film, Passenger, has moved back into the second spot this week. The director of Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter has returned with a movie that explores a different aspect of our fears as a young couple lets go of their comfortable life in New York City for life on the road.

Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell, and Melissa Leo star in the film, where a demonic presence latches onto the former New Yorkers who seek a life of simplicity and peace, but find a hellish race to find a sanctuary where the beast following them can be held at bay. The Catholic saint and medallions honoring him are a charm against misfortune on the road, since Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers, which figures into the plot of the film. Passenger is now streaming on Paramount+.

It's still September, but home viewers are already ramping up their Halloween cinematic pre-gaming. Obviously, John Carpenter's slasher film that started the Halloween series is one of the movies that set the tone for Halloween celebrations and is one of the most-watched movies during the scary season. No film is going to hit quite like the 1978 original, which also provided a template for slashers that is still followed today.

Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis in her first film, P. J. Soles, Charles Cyphers, Kyle Richards, Brian Andrews, Nancy Loomis, and Nick Castle as the physical representation of Michael Myers or The Shape star in the film that made the modern slasher subgenre possible and made it so popular.

Halloween (1978) is now streaming on AMC+, CultPix, and Shudder.

Netflix seems to have a bona fide streaming only hit on its hands with The Last House. The Louis Leterrier-directed film, written by Matthew Robinson and starring Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, hasn't lost the interest of the audience yet, well after the glow of the admittedly clever publicity on a Sunset Boulevard billboard has worn off. Neither one of the actors has starred in a horror film before.

In the film, a family and all of their neighbors are trapped inside their houses, which goes from a mild inconvenience to a major problem as time passes and they have no new sources of food or medicine. It slowly becomes evident that strange and dangerous creatures are roaming outside their home, which makes things so much worse.

The Last House is now streaming on Netflix.

Snuff films, chat rooms on the dark net, and the weird fascination that human beings have for people accused of hideous murders converge in the Canadian film Red Rooms, written and directed by Pascal Plante. The film is deeply unsettling, and one of the stills, which you have probably already seen while reading this list, comes from an unforgettable scene in the film, at a key turning point.

Juliette Gariépy, Laurie Babin, Elisabeth Locas, Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, Natalie Tannous, Pierre Chagnon, and Guy Thauvette star in the movie that has become a cult hit talked up by those who saw it during its festival run, and that has broken out to a more mainstream audience after being added to Prime.

Red Rooms is now streaming on AMC+, Prime, and Shudder.

The critically acclaimed film from 2016, written and directed by South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, has pulled in streaming viewers after the release of the director's newest monster movie, Hope. The Wailing has a rare 99% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and stars Kwak Do-won, Hwang Jung-min, and Chun Woo-hee. It is a cult hit that die-hard South Korean horror movie buffs revere.

In a remote Korean village, a policeman must solve the mystery of a strange infection that causes the afflicted to go mad and violently attack others. His daughter has also disappeared after a Japanese man appears in the village, and this visitor may be the key or the cause of the murderous plague.

The Wailing is now streaming on Screambox.

The screenlife sensation of 2020 has returned to the top ten horror movies on streaming this week. It was the fright film that made Zoom famous, because it was one of the easiest ways to congregate with your friends during the first year of the pandemic. Directed by Rob Savage, who also co-wrote the script with Gemma Hurley and Jed Shepherd, Host is considered both a screenlife and found footage movie, since the recording of the deadly Zoom call is where the footage came from.

Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, Caroline Ward, Edward Linard, Seylan Baxter, and Jinny Lofthouse star as the group of friends meeting online who unwisely decided to hold a virtual séance and must face the consequences of that and other decisions that they make. The idea for the movie came from a prank video that Savage created to scare some of his friends, some of whom were cast in the movie.

Host is now streaming on AMC+, Netflix, and Shudder.  The film will leave Netflix on October 5.

One of horror's most beloved filmmakers' other masterpieces, yes, John Carpenter has more than one, has also scored a spot on this week's list. While The Thing is definitely not Halloween-themed, it is one of the scariest examples of human paranoia and isolation, as a team of American Antarctic scientists and crew comes to grief after discovering that a team of Norwegian scientists found the wreck of an alien spacecraft and one of their sled dogs.

Kurt Russell, A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites star in this incredible film whose quality was not appreciated upon its release, but has since become a cult favorite and then finally a revered classic.

The Thing is now streaming on Prime.

The excitement of the imminent release of Zach Cregger's next film, Resident Evil, is palpable. Obviously, Weapons was one of the blockbuster horror movies of 2025 and was also critically acclaimed and considered another high point of Cregger's burgeoning career. The tale of a small town that lost almost an entire class of children one night struck a chord with horror fans and mainstream cinema fans alike.

Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan star in the film, working as a tight and committed ensemble cast, with standouts Amy Madigan, who won an Academy Award for her work as the dastardly, yet pitiable, Aunt Gladys, Austin Abrams as the hapless drug addict James, and Benedict Wong as one of the nicest principals you could ever meet.

Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.  The movie will leave Prime on September 22.

Welcome back, Heretic, which is a film that hasn't appeared in the top ten since June 2025. The film has experienced a resurgence since it was added to Hulu, and the most malign visit of two young and naive Mormon missionaries has sprung up again to entrance and frighten viewers with its potent mix of seemingly polite conversation and evil plotting. Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, and Hugh Grant, in a magnificent example of playing against his type as a charming and harmless man, star as the three people meeting for the first time.

Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for their script. They also co-wrote the script for A Quiet Place with John Krasinski and wrote and directed Haunt. 

Heretic is now streaming on Hulu.
