Halloween grows ever closer as we peruse the top horror movies streaming this week. Is it a coincidence that there are again four classic horror movies in the top ten? One of them is new, but for the second week in a row, it is exactly the same number. It's a little under 50% of the most popular fright films, but still quite an impressive number. As October draws to its close, genre fans seem to want to revisit their all-time favorites, and there's nothing wrong with that.
The big news is that Irish film director Damian McCarthy‘s newest movie has joined the list and has achieved a feat that none of his previous two films have accomplished. His second film, 2024's Oddity, never grabbed a spot higher than number three on previous lists. McCarthy's films have been regarded as sleeper hits that got horror fans talking and recommending them to other fans. His first two films, including 2020's Caveat, were released on Shudder, which recognized his talents early on.

Hokum - Streaming on Hulu
HOKUM (Credit: IMDb) Irish director Damian McCarthy's third film, Hokum, has shot straight to the top of the charts after its streaming premiere on Hulu. Adam Scott stars in the film with Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Florence Ordesh, Michael Patric, Will O'Connell, Brendan Conroy, and Austin Amelio appearing alongside him in supporting roles. McCarthy has been building a great reputation as a director with his previous films, 2020's Caveat and 2024's Oddity.
In Hokum, an American writer with Irish ancestry, Ohm Bauman, while trying to break through his writer's block to complete his latest book in a trilogy, checks into the hotel where his parents spent their honeymoon, but has no idea about the hotel's supernatural reputation. Hearing tales of a witch and ghosts, Ohm tries to find the truth after releasing his parents' ashes.
Hokum is now streaming on Hulu.
Obsession - Streaming on Peacock
OBSESSION (Credit: IMDb) The film that has been horror fans' Obsession has been on the top horror streaming chart for three and a half months and is still doing very well with home viewers as the character of Nikki haunts patrons at Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights (HHN). It has been reported that the actor who plays Nikki Freeman, Inde Navarette, attended HHN and met the character in the park. She reportedly claimed that she would like to play Nikki at HHN “for a couple of days.”
Who knows, it could come to pass, which would certainly be a big surprise for fans at HHN. It is also interesting to note that writer and director Curry Barker played the voice role of the One Wish Willow customer service representative, which he added during the editing process.
The film will leave Peacock in 25 days, on November 15.
Obsession is now streaming on Peacock.
Backrooms - Streaming on HBO Max
BACKROOMS (Credit: IMDb) An endless labyrinth of rooms with yellow walls, furniture piled up as if a magnet sucked the individual pieces together, objects seemingly repeating themselves to show a series of their decay, Lovecraftian geometry, and wandering monsters. This is only part of what you will find in Kane Parsons' Backrooms. The film grew out of the sandbox that was a Reddit forum that pulled in people looking for other worlds.
One of 2026's highest-grossing horror films, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, was directed by Kane Parsons as his first feature film and based on his popular found footage YouTube series.
Backrooms is now streaming on HBO Max.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma - Streaming on Mubi
TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA (Credit: Mubi) The title of writer and director Jane Schoenbrun's film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, is very apt. It focuses on two of the most important plot points in any slasher movie and plays with them with a surreal gusto. It was made with such an obvious love of the genre, which is something that Schoenbrun obviously understands. For any final girl, opening yourself up to another person is hard and frightening, but when you finally find the right weirdo, it's magical.
Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson are the two final girls who find themselves drawn to each other and to danger, Jack Haven, as Little Death, the deadliest and perhaps most sensitive slasher killer, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kevin McDonald, Louise Weard, and Patrick Fischler.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is now streaming on Mubi.
Carrie (1976) - Streaming on Prime
CARRIE (1976) (Credit: IMDb) Another returning classic fright film is Brian De Palma's Carrie, which has moved up the chart this week from number seven to number five. While it is obviously a film that people would like to revisit during scary season, there is perhaps another reason for its popularity in the last two weeks. The reason is the release of Mike Flanagan's television series adaptation of Stephen King's first novel. As we have observed before, there is nothing like the release of a new film or TV show in a franchise to bring viewers back to previous films.
Some of our greatest directors in cinema have started or made films in our favorite genre, and De Palma is no exception. One of De Palma's signature types of shots is the split-screen shot, with two focal points; in De Palma's work, it is often two faces in different spots, achieved by using the split-diopter lens. When you watch the film, keep an eye out for this stylistic flourish.
Carrie (1976) is now streaming on Prime.
Halloween (1978) - Streaming on Shudder
HALLOWEEN (Credit: IMDB) John Carpenter's Halloween is perfect for October for obvious reasons, but it is also a movie that has been selected for the National Film Registry for preservation because it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” One of the reasons that it has stood the test of time and been so influential in cinema as a whole is the film's style, with Dean Cundey's excellent cinematography and Carpenter's iconic score and its substance.
It is a film made with care and purpose, even if it only had a $300,000 budget. The still that illustrates this entry is of one of the movie's quiet reveals that shows more about Michael Myers' deadly road to Haddonfield. The score comes up, and the camera pans gently to the right, as the score comes up. It's a chilling moment.
Friday the 13th - Streaming on AMC+
FRIDAY THE 13TH (Credit: IMDB) One of this week's returning horror classic favorites in the top ten is Sean S. Cunningham's Friday the 13th. Interestingly, Sean S. Cunningham, director of Friday the 13th, was the producer on Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left. Gore guru Tom Savini created the special effects for each of the film's bloody deaths, which include a decapitation, arrows piercing flesh, and an axe to the face.
Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Laurie Bartram, Mark Nelson, Jeannine Taylor, Robbi Morgan, and Kevin Bacon star in the film, which is another film on this list that is likely being revisited by fans of the TV series Crystal Lake, which is a prequel in the Friday the 13th franchise.
Friday the 13th is now streaming on AMC+, Kanopy, Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, and Tubi. It will leave Paramount+, Peacock, and Tubi in nine days, or on Halloween.
Evil Dead Burn - Streaming on HBO Max
EVIL DEAD BURN (Credit: IMDb) Souheila Yacoub (Climax, Dune: Part Two), Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Erroll Shand, and Maude Davey star in Evil Dead Burn, the sixth film in the Evil Dead series that has been revived twice, once after the original trilogy by Sam Raimi and then again after Fede Alvarez's sequel. The series last two films have a fearsome reputation for gore and bleakness, which Evil Dead Burn lives up to.
The film made over three times the budget at the box office, so while it might not have made the splash that previous sequels made, it was definitely very profitable. It was also added as a haunt attraction at 2026's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida, which is another mark of success in horror.
Evil Dead Burn is now streaming on HBO Max.
Scream (1996) - Streaming on Paramount+
SCREAM (Credit: IMDB) Another fright film classic that plays wonderfully during the scary season is Wes Craven's Scream. Ghostface's mask and costume, and the partying and sex seeking high school students are hallmarks of the slasher genre, with Craven adding the meta plot device of the killer being obsessed with horror movies and using scary movie trivia as the test for Ghostie's victims' survival.
David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Rose McGowan, Skeet Ulrich, Liev Schreiber, and Drew Barrymore. Roger L. Jackson plays a key character as the voice of Ghostface, with a sneering and dangerous tone that contributes a lot to the movie's success. The movie has great cameos: Henry Winkler as the sensitive Principal Hendry, Linda Blair as an aggressive news reporter, and Craven himself as Fred the Janitor, a reference to Freddy Krueger, from his film A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Scream (1996) is now streaming on Hulu, Kanopy, Paramount+, Peacock, and Pluto TV. Scream (1996) will leave Peacock on Halloween.
Weapons - Streaming on Prime
WEAPONS (Credit: IMDb) Zach Cregger's hit film from 2025 has sprinted back into the top horror movies streaming this week's list. After scoring a berth on the list for five weeks, it briefly dropped out but has returned. It is something that may have been forgotten over time, but Weapons was a spec script that Cregger wrote, and there was a brief but fierce bidding war on the morning he sent it out for consideration to several studios, after the success of Barbarian.
The story goes that the process took 90 minutes, and New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. closed the deal within 24 hours. It is also said that producer and director Jordan Peele let his managers, Joel Zadak and Peter Principato, go after his bid for the script, made with Universal Studios and his production company, Monkeypaw Productions, missed the opportunity.
