THE PURGE 6 Will Bring Back A Fan Favorite Character, Says James DeMonaco

The sixth film in the dystopian horror franchise has officially been written, and is in Jason Blum's hands.
THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR (2016)

A sixth movie in The Purge series is officially in the works from creator James DeMonaco, per an exclusive report from Bloody Disgusting earlier today.

DeMonaco, who wrote 2013โ€™s The Purge, 2014โ€™s The Purge: Anarchy, 2016โ€™s The Purge: Election Year, 2018โ€™s The First Purge, and 2021โ€™s The Forever Purge, as well as directing the first three had the following to say to the good folks at Bloody in a chat posted earlier today:

โ€œI just finished a script. My producer, Sรฉbastien Lemercier, has read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason [Blum] […]  Iโ€™m really happy with it. I hope they like it. I think itโ€™s cool and fun. Weโ€™re hoping next year would be great to shoot, maybe the end of this year if timing works out. But now itโ€™s with the powers that be, so weโ€™ll see what happens.โ€

DeMonaco also revealed that a fan favorite may be returning to the franchise, with Bloody speculating that he could well be referring to Frank Grillo, who starred as Sgt. Leo Barnes in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year  (and we're inclined to agree with them!)

“Peopleโ€™s favorite character might be coming back, I can say without naming who that is; a couple of people who could be. But someoneโ€™s coming back who I love and I think the audience loves.โ€

As for new characters, DeMonaco teases some “real warrior women” who come forth in a possibly female-led sixth film.

Back in 2023, DeMonaco expressed doubt that a sixth The Purge would go ahead due to budget concerns, a worry that thankfully seems to be off the table now. Here's what he hinted a sixth entry in the anthology series could hold back then:

“The America I present in Purge 6 is where we all are separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways […]  But my thing was if I was going to come back and direct a sixth one, it was going to be something bigger and a little more epic in scope, with this new America I want to present and bringing back [Frank Grilloโ€™s] character. So, itโ€™s kinda in limbo.โ€

DeMonaco's The Home, starring Pete Davidson, is set for release on July 25 in the United States, as well as opening London's FrightFest in August.  Check out Bloody's full chat with DeMonaco below:
