A new Godzilla story is taking us back to where it all started, one that promises to be full-on scary and horrific. IDW Publishing has announced a new series entitled The Horror of Godzilla, which will showcase the King of the Monstersโ first attack on Japan through a new lens. Rather appropriately, weโre going back to 1954 when the original Godzilla made its debut on the big screen all those many years ago.ย

As was first reported by Bloody Disgusting, The Horror of Godzilla is a black and white comic book that will hit shelves this summer written by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan (Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone) with art by Tristan Jones (Event Horizon: Dark Descent). Not a retelling of the events of the โ54 movie from a new POV, it instead offers up a look at humanityโs first encounter with Godzilla within the Kai-Sei Era, which IDW launched last year. We've also got the first artwork for the book for you to check out below. The synopsis for the book reads as follows:ย
โSet in 1954 Japan, witness the sheer terror behind Godzillaโs first horrifying onslaught on the human race and how the power behind its Kai-Sei energy has a frightening and transformative impact on humans exposed to the grim blasts.โ

The Kai-Sei Era is an interconnected universe of Godzilla stories, one that was meant to give readers a fresh jumping-on point with no baggage. Each book is built to stand on its own. This one is no different as itโs a prequel showcasing this eraโs version of Godzillaโs first attack on Japan. Editor Jake Williams had this to say about it:ย
โThe Horror of Godzilla is for fans of Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla โ54. Itโs a terrifying look at the Kai-Sei eraโs first Godzilla attack. It grabs the reader and places them on the ground in the middle of the most petrifying night in human history: the arrival of Godzilla. Through the power of Tristan Jonesโ visceral art style, this is the first Godzilla comic weโve released that goes 100% in on horror. It very well might become the best Godzilla comic ever made. Itโs certainly the scariest.โ
โThe first year of the Kai-Sei Era found us in a world โ a galaxy, even โ steeped in kaiju, as we felt that was the best starting point for this universe,โ ย Parker and Sheridan added. โBut now is the perfect moment to go back to the narrative bedrock, the genesis of our tale: humanityโs very first meeting with Godzilla. To not only be asked to tell this crucial chapter of the Kai-Sei saga, but also to make it as wild and horrific as possibleโฆOh, and Tristan Jones is going to draw it?! Weโre beyond honored and cannot wait to share this one with readers.โ
The Horror of Godzilla #1 doesnโt currently have a release date but stay tuned.
