Following a series of highly successful remakes, the ninth mainline game now racking up rave reviews, and Zach Cregger's movie adaptation on the horizon, horror gamers are truly enjoying a Resident Evil renaissance. In less than a week since release, Resident Evil Requiem, now available for Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, has set an all-time Metacritic user score record, cementing its place in survival horror history forever, largely thanks to how downright terrifying large portions of the game are. To celebrate Requiem‘s achievement, we're looking back and dissecting the ultimate scariest moments Capcom's legendary series has to offer. Herbs at the ready.

  • 15. Doll Room - Resident Evil - Code: Veronica

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica is begging for a modern day remake so that more fans can experience one of the more underrated entries in the Resident Evil series. While Code: Veronica might not be as well remembered for scary moments as its fellow Resi gamesthe Private Residence level really does deserve a special nod. The Gothic atmosphere is heavy, making it feel like Claire is exploring an old vampire castle.

What makes Private Residence's doll room so disturbing isn't just its aesthetics, however, but the disturbing context behind it. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror PsychoResident Evil – Code: Veronica features one of the series' most deranged antagonists in Alfred Ashcroft, whose obsession with his twin sister Alexia hangs over the game – in this case, quite literally.

  • 14. First zombie reveal - Resident Evil

The reveal that changed everything in RESIDENT EVIL (Credit: Capcom)

It's easy to giggle at the outdated graphics of 1996's Resident Evil, especially if your first exposure to the iconic survival horror franchise came much later, but for those of us who experienced playing on the earlier generation consoles firsthand, it's hard to overstate just how terrifying this first zombie reveal was. The player stumbles across a figure feasting on the body of one of the operatives they've been sent to rescue, which turns to face the camera with almost unbearable slowness as we realize just what the hell we're looking at here.

While the Resident Evil Remake version of this scene is obviously more detailed, gorier and more visceral due to higher graphic fidelity, there's a stilted uncanniness to the original that can't be beaten. The zombie's eyes retain just enough humanity to make you pause and wonder if it can still be saved. As the first zombie we see in what would go on to become the most famous zombie game series of all time, the impact this one moment had on modern horror as a whole shouldn't be overlooked.

  • 13. Ooze Rachel finds you - Resident Evil: Revelations

Resident Evil: Revelations is a real mixed bag, balancing a truly creepy cruise ship setting and impressive graphics for a Nintendo 3DS title with frustrating combat, and some incredibly 2010s character designs (derogatory). Just look at Rachel Foley, a Federal Bioterrorism Commission Agent who investigates Revelations‘ viral outbreak in one of the most impractical outfits in video game history.

However, after Rachel is exposed to the t-Abyss virus, she turns from Victoria's Secret model into one of Resident Evil‘s most unsettling monsters. Ooze Rachel not only looks terrifying, she also sounds it, her distorted giggles echoing off the walls of the Queen Zenobia as she hunts down Jill. Rachel's breathy taunt of “found yoooou” is still pure nightmare fuel, even if she is remembered for, ahem, her other assets.

  • 12. Ashley vs the Knights - Resident Evil 4 Remake

The action-heavy Resident Evil 4 and its 2023 remake are less scarier overall than other entries in the Resident Evil series, but that doesn't mean they're totally lacking in frights. One of the scariest moments of the series takes place in Chapter 9 of the remake, after Leon has been captured in the Grand Hall of Salazar's castle by Zealots. Unfortunately for him, his only hope of rescue comes in the form of President's daughter Ashley Graham, who has to make her way into the inner chamber of the castle and avoid getting skewered by parasite-possessed suits of armor.

The contrast between playing as Leon, with his vast array of weapons and ability to roundhouse kick the crap out of any Las Plagas-riddled freak in his way, and Ashley, who weighs 100lbs soaking wet and has no weapon to speak of, makes for a truly terrifying gameplay experience. While Ashley is faster than the knights and able to outrun them, her unfamiliarity with the dark, labyrinthine area can easily mean she ends up cornered with no way to escape. Even on assisted gameplay mode, getting knocked by the knights is a one-hit kill.

  • 11. The zombie behind the door - Resident Evil 2

The loading screen doors of Resident Evil quickly became a source of comfort, providing a brief reprieve from the zombie carnage and allowing players to catch their breath before venturing into the unknown. But at one point in Resident Evil 2, just as players have let their guard down, that safe space is sacrilegiously spoiled when the door animation opens to reveal zombies behind it, which then immediately attack.

Bigger, louder jumpscares would come in the Resident Evil series, but it's the total obliteration of expectation and the realization that you are NEVER safe in the world of Resi that makes this one so scary. If you ever want to inspire lifelong trust issues in a generation, this is how you do it.

  • 10. The Baker's basement - Resident Evil Biohazard

Sometimes you reach a point in a game where you need to hit pause, put the controller down, take a deep breath and steady yourself for what's to come. In Resident Evil Biohazard, there are many of these moments, but perhaps none more so than descending into the dreaded basement of the Baker family home.

At this point in the game, players have been stalked by the maniacal Baker family patriarch, Jack, and seen firsthand what he can do with a shovel. But Jack feels like child's play compared to what's lurking down there. As protagonist Ethan, gamers must navigate through tight, winding corridors while avoiding the beastly humanoid creatures known as Molded. Molded are strong as hell, and require a crackshot to take down with clear aim and focus – attributes that are in short supply when you're freaking out trying to avoid getting turned into black ooze.

  • 9. Regenerator Lab - Resident Evil 4

The hulking, heavy-breathing Regenerators are easily one of Resident Evil 4‘s most nightmare-inducing monsters, with the added fear factor that they just WILL NOT DIE. As the name suggests, these horrible things won't go down easily, or at all if you haven't equipped a specialized scope to eliminate the Plagas parasite dwelling within their putrid fleshy bodies. Good luck dealing with an entire lab of them.

Oh, and just when you think you've got the Regenerators sussed, the game decides to introduce their spikier, hardier, more messed up cousin, the Iron Maiden, making you wish you were still back in the village fighting the Ganados.

  • 8. Interrogation room Licker - Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2‘s Licker smashing through the two-way mirror of the RPD's interrogation room is a jumpscare so effective it should come with a weak heart warning. Everyone knows that a quiet room in a horror video game is suspicious, sure, but in this moment, nobody expected a giant mutated skinless lizard-man to come bursting through the glass at an ungodly speed.

Gamers learned a valuable lesson from that mirror, and it's that unless that save room theme is playing, there are no safe spaces in Resi world. And yes, this moment is just as terrifying in the Resident Evil 2 Remake, but at least some of us knew it was coming. Still didn't make it less horrific, though.

  • 7. Rose meets the mannequins - Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose DLC

Resident Evil Village‘s House Beneviento is easily one of the scariest locations in survival horror gaming history, so it makes sense that Capcom would want to reuse it for the DLC. Shadows of Rose sees Ethan's daughter Rosemary (who we last saw as a baby in Village), now a 16-year-old with mutant superpowers, who enters a fungal-induced dark realm of her father's memories in order to destroy the abilities that have stopped her from living a normal life.

Just as it was during Ethan's run, House Beneviento is scary as all hell, but this time around, Rosemary has to contend with being followed by wooden mannequins modelled after her mother, Mia. The mannequins can only move when Rose isn't looking at them, which makes navigating the tight corridors of House Beneviento an exercise is pure panic. As if dolls weren't creepy enough.

  • 6. First Crimson Head encounter - Resident Evil Remake

Nothing stays dead in the Resident Evil universe, that much is obvious, but at least you could usually guarantee that reanimated corpses were usually still staggeringly slow enough to outrun. That all changed with Resident Evil Remake and the introduction of the Crimson Heads, mutated zombies which are not only just as fast as Chris and Jill, but can also reach for them with clawed hands, making escape an incredibly stressful endeavour.

If you choose to fight these freaks head on rather than escape, then good luck and godspeed to you, because Crimson Heads are, naturally, far tougher than regular zombies. You better hope and pray you have shotgun shells on hand if you want to stand a chance of getting out of a Crimson Head encounter unscathed.

  • 5. Nemesis' pursuit - Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Much like Mr. X before him, Nemesis in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a formidable foe who relentlessly pursues the player (in this case, Jill Valentine) throughout the game. Unlike Mr. X however, with Nemesis, it feels personal. While Mr. X went after Leon and Claire to get the job done, Nemesis seems like he actively enjoys toying with Jill and making her suffer.

Inspired by Terminator‘s T-1000, Nemesis is stronger, smarter and more strategic than Mr. X, and his pursuit of Jill is an unrelenting source of anxiety throughout the original Resident Evil 3, never knowing when or where he's going to appear and knock you on your ass. Just hearing Nemesis' gravelly growl of “S.T.A.R.S…” is enough to induce an anxiety attack.

  • 4. Hiding from The Girl - Resident Evil Requiem

Half of Resident Evil Requiem offers some of the most ass-kicking Leon Kennedy action the series has to offer, and the other half? It's hell, frankly. Playing as FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft is pure survival horror, stripping you of weapons and plunging you into darkness where stealth is necessary for survival. Grace's first encounter with a monstrous being known as The Girl in the Rhodes Hill Care Center is easily one of the most anxiety-inducing stretches of gameplay in Resident Evil history.

Not only is The Girl's massive, mutated form objectively terrifying, Grace's first person POV makes the pitch black corridors of the Rhodes Hill Care Center extra claustrophobic, feeling endless when you're being chased and trying to sneak around without being gobbled up. We've never missed Leon and his one-liners so much.

  • 3. Possessed Mia - Resident Evil Biohazard

After the heavy action focus of Resident Evil 6 left fans cold, Capcom wisely decided to pivot back to pure survival horror for Resident Evil Biohazard, and in doing so created one of the most pants-wettingly scary video games of all time. From the very start, Biohazard throws Ethan (and the player) in at the deep end with an absolutely horrific first fight against Mia, his once-beloved wife turned murderous mold monster.

The introduction to Mold Mia sees her croaking and crawling up the stairs like something out of the classic J-horror movies like Ring and Ju-On, a new style of fear that had rarely been explored amid the fast-paced splatter chaos the Resident Evil games usually throw at us. Mia's horrific transformation signalled a new frontier for the franchise, and ushered in the scariest title in the series yet.

  • 2. Meeting Mr. X - Resident Evil 2 Remake

Even though Resident Evil 2 fans knew this moment was coming, nothing could've fully prepared us for the first appearance of Mr. X in the remake. In the original game the towering tyrant is a formidable foe, sure, but in the remake, he's an absolute monster, relentlessly stalking Leon or Claire through the halls of the Raccoon City Police Department with his stomping heavy footsteps and theme music that somehow literally sounds like a stomach dropping from fear.

While you can shake Mr. X for a while by stealthily sneaking around, he will always find you. Trying to evade this giant hulking psycho while also fighting off zombies and trying to solve puzzles makes the return to the RPD easily one of the scariest and most stressful levels in video game history, and no, his little fedora doesn't make him any less horrible.

  • 1. House Beneviento - Resident Evil Village

With its fantastical setting, weird, wonderful characters and fast-paced action, the first quarter of Resident Evil Village lulls you into a false sense of security, seemingly promising that this game will be far less scary than its predessecor, the relentlessly terrifying Resident Evil Biohazard. But then Ethan steps foot into House Beneviento, and you quickly realize how mistaken you were.

Ask any Resident Evil fan what they think the scariest moment of the franchise is, and it's highly likely they'll say this one. Not only is House Beneviento full of Silent Hill style slow, subtle scares, Ethan is also stripped of his weapons and health items, meaning you're completely helpless against any monstrous abominations lurking in the dark. The good news? There's only one real enemy you have to avoid as you move through the shadowy residence of the reclusive Donna Beneviento. The bad news? It's a gigantic, wailing, slobbering, gargantuan baby beast that wants nothing more to gobble Ethan up like a damp potato chip. Run, hide, and don't even try to play peek-a-boo with this thing.
