To the surprise of pretty much nobody following Scream 7‘s record-breaking box office runScream 8 is not only officially greenlit, but has found its writers in the form of Lilla and Nora Zuckerman (Poker Face, the ill-fated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot series).

Deadline, who revealed the news exclusively earlier today, confirmed that Spyglass is currently in development on the eighth entry of the iconic slasher series with the pair, who have also worked as writers and co-executive producers on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe and Prodigal Son, but no news yet on plot details or casting.

Released last month, Scream 7 saw original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson return in a directorial role, with the film centering on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who has built a new life for her family in a small town. Her darkest fears come true as a new Ghostface shows up and they’re deliberately targeting her daughter Tatum (Isabel May). Sidney must face the horrors of her past once more in order to protect her family. Also along for the ride were Scream series alums Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy-Brown, David Arquette, Scott Foley and scream king and Ghostface vodka connoisseur Matthew Lillard.

While Scream 7 undoubtedly did gangbusters at the box office, racking up over $200M globally, critical reviews were mixed, not to mention the many fans left cold by Spyglass' controversial decision to fire Scream 5 and 6 star Melissa Barrera, and subsequently the loss of her onscreen sister, Jenna Ortega.

That's all we know for now about Scream 8, but we'll keep you posted. For more slasher news, here's our first look at A24's upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake.
