Paramount To Reboot SCARY MOVIE Franchise

The 2000s horror spoof series is coming back to life thanks to Paramount, Miramax and producer Neal H. Moritz.

Fresh out of CinemaCon today comes the news that the horror parody film franchiseย Scary Movie is being rebooted by Paramount Pictures and Fast and Furious producer Neal H. Moritz.

Released back in 2000, Keenen Ivory Wayans' 2000 Scary Movieย took shots at slashers likeย Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summerย andย Friday the 13th. Across its five sequels, no horror movie was safe, withย The Exorcist, Signs, The Ring, Saw, Ju-On, Evil Dead andย Mama (to name but a few) all being parodied. Grossing $278 million on a $19 million budget,ย Scary Movie was a box office hit, although the rest of the series didn't fare as well.

According to Variety, the newย Scary Movie is going into production in the fall of 2024, and should hit theaters in 2025. News of plot or casting is still to be revealed, but hopefully any new instalment of the franchise will see the return of the iconic duo of Anna Faris' Cindy and Regina Hall's Brenda.

Variety also let us know that “Scary Movie is also being made as part of the Paramountโ€™s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. โ€ฏMiramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution. The indie label is a joint venture between Paramount and BeIN. Miramax recently announced that it has a new CEO in former MGM chief Jonathan Glickman.”

The last officialย Scary Movie, Scary Movie 5, was released back in 2013, and ย the horror landscape has changed significantly since then! Place your bets on what new tropes and genres get parodied – our money's on ‘elevated' horrors like Hereditary ย or The Babadook, the folk horror resurgence of Midsommar and The Witch, the reign of Blumhouse with movies like M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy‘s, and, of course, there's a bunch of new Scream stuff to get extra meta with.

We'll keep you posted on any and allย Scary Movie updates as we get them!
