Paul W.S. Anderson made a name for himself directing the cosmic horror film Event Horizon in 1997, and now he’s making a return to the genre. Deadline reports that the director has signed on to direct adaptations of Nether Station and Nether Vortex, a sci-fi horror duology written by Kevin J. Anderson.
Both books are set to be adapted for the screen by scribe Jonathan Wakeham, with director Anderson producing alongside Jeremy Bolt, John Harlacher, and Tony Eldridge. No cast has been announced as of yet, but the books’ synopsis (per Deadline) are as follows:
The novels follow Cammie Skoura, a brilliant, neurodivergent young scientist aboard a deep-space expedition that uncovers a trail of ancient ruins and long-dead alien civilizations leading toward a mind-shattering discovery.

“Space is scary—think of how terrifying it would be all alone out in the cold, dark, oblivion?” said author Anderson to Deadline about where he got the inspiration for Nether Station. “I tried to put all my fears and paranoia into Nether Station, and powerful films like Event Horizon were extremely influential in the writing. I couldn’t imagine a better director for this project than Paul W.S. Anderson.”
Nether Station marks the first proper horror film Anderson has directed since 2020, when he directed his wife Milla Jovovich in an adaptation of the video game series Monster Hunter. (He also notably directed a whopping six Resident Evil films starring Jovovich, the last of which was released in 2016.)
“I’ve been a long term fan of Kevin’s work and to say it is cinematic is an understatement,” he said to Deadline. “I was thrilled to read Nether Station, the galleys of its sequel and also talk in detail with him about how he plans to expand the terrifying universe that he is creating. Lovecraftian cosmic horror, as experienced by a unique, young central character in Cammie Skoura, has all the ingredients for an unbelievably compelling and terrifying cinema experience.”
No release date has been set for either of the Nether Station movies. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
