While Guillermo del Toro continues to make horror films that redefine the genre as we know it, maybe none of his work is more beloved than Pan’s Labyrinth, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year. And, with Cineverse and Fathom Entertainment collaborating to rerelease the film, we now have a trailer that gives us a first look at what we can expect from the new version of the fantasy horror film.

Originally released in 2006, Pan’s Labyrinth stars Ivana Baquero, Maribel Verdu, Doug Jones, and Sergi Lopez, and was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning three. The film’s synopsis is as follows:

In the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, young Ofelia and her pregnant mother have been brought to live in the countryside, where her brutal stepfather Captain Vidal's job is to wipe out the remaining rebels camped in the local forest. Nearby, in a hidden labyrinth, Ofelia meets an ageless Faun, who tells her that she is really a princess from an enchanted world. He gives her three tasks which she must complete in order to reclaim her rightful place. As her mother's failing health threatens the life of her unborn child, Ofelia undertakes a quest to complete the Faun's tasks.

Pan’s Labyrinth is a modern-day cinematic masterpiece wonderfully suited for audiences to rediscover on the big screen,” says Fathom’s Ray Nutt. “Even better, thanks to our partners at Cineverse and in celebration of its 20th anniversary, we are presenting Pan’s Labyrinth with premium large format (PLF) viewing options – including 3D – for the ultimate, must-see cinematic experience.”

In partnership with SDFX Studios, Cineverse and Fathom will present Pan’s Labyrinth for the first time ever in 4K, including both in HDR and in 3D. Each version was overseen by del Toro himself, meaning audiences will get to see the definitive version of his masterpiece on the big screen.

“Everyone at our company is incredibly proud of our role in bringing this classic into stereoscopic 3D,” said SDFX’s Vincent Defebo. “Collaborating with Guillermo del Toro on Pan’s Labyrinth has been a dream come true for our entire team.”

Tickets for the anniversary screenings of Pan’s Labyrinth go on sale at participating theaters on September 9.
