It’s been a minute since Ana Lily Amirpour, a living firecracker of a filmmaker whose previous features (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, The Bad Batch) seared themselves into our brains, dropped a new film on us.

Today, we are pleased to report that the wait for her latest is almost over! Next month, Amirpour’s Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon will hit digital, On Demand, and theaters … and from the looks of the film’s just-released trailer, it’ll be just as wild a ride as her previous efforts.

Let’s take a look at the film’s hypnotic first trailer:

In case you’re not picking up what the trailer’s putting down, Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon revolves around a patient who escapes a New Orleans mental institute (Jun Jong Seo) before crossing paths with a struggling single mother (Kate Hudson, not quite unrecognizable but certainly close). Turns out our escapee has some seriously dangerous supernatural powers, which the pair use to launch a cash-earning crime spree that quickly grabs the attention of a nosy local detective (the always-reliable Craig Robinson). We’re not sure how this is all gonna play out, but we’re guessing that things will get very weird along the way.

Amirpour’s films have always been divisive, and Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon seems to be no different: reactions from the people I’ve spoken with who caught the film at this year’s Overlook Film Festival truly ran the gamut, which of course only has me more curious to see the damn thing.

When will that happen? Amirpour’s latest hits theaters, digital, and On Demand September 30th. We’re excited to see what she’s come up with here. If nothing else, you can always count on this filmmaker to deliver a wild-ass time at the movies. Stay tuned for more on this one as further updates become available.
