The year has only just begun, and A24 has already begun rolling out the red carpet for their latest horror film, the next in a long line of much-lauded projects. Opus, described as โflashy pop horrorโ about a โtense, psychological game of cat and mouseโ has just received eight new character posters, highlighting the familiar faces that will fill out the first major horror release of the year.
Premiering at this yearโs Sundance Film Festival, the debut film from writer-director Mark Anthony Green โcenters on an ambitious young writer invited to the isolated compound of an iconic pop star who mysteriously disappeared and hasn't been seen in three decades. There she discovers, surrounded by the musician's cult of followers, the twisted machinations behind his grand return.โ The Bearโs Ayo Edebiri plays the young writer, while the mysterious pop star is played by genre icon John Malkovich.
The rest of the filmโs cult (of personality) is filled out by a number of big name stars, including Preyโs Amber Midthunder, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino, and Tony Hale. They all appear in their resplendent glamour in the new character posters, with literal stars in their eyes over being let into the pop starโs inner circle. Itโs probably safe to say that those stars wonโt remain, however.
Similar to last yearโs Trap and Smile 2, the film is said to feature musical numbers, though to what extent, we donโt know, as much of the film is being kept under wraps ahead of its premiere at Sundance. Though we may get a better idea of just what awaits us on January 21, when A24 is set to drop the filmโs trailer.
Opus premieres in theaters on March 14, following its Sundance premiere. Check out the new character posters below:
