If you asked any Godzilla fan whether there’s a bigger, badder, nastier monster than him, they’d probably say no — which would’ve been true, up until now. Apple TV+ just released the trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, and the series is upping the stakes by pitting Godzilla against the greatest threat he’s ever faced.
The new trailer focuses on the appearance of Titan X, an unidentified titan who shares bioluminescent properties with Godzilla and aquatic-style tentacles with the infamous Kraken, though exactly what it is remains a mystery. It poses a larger threat to humanity than even the King of the Monsters, and Lee Shaw decides that there’s only one thing to do to save the earth from sheer destruction: pit titan against titan.
That’s right — Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is assembling Kong and Godzilla much like they would the Avengers, in the third team-up between the two iconic creatures since Legendary acquired the rights to an American franchise for Godzilla. It’s unclear whether this fight to the death will be anything similar to the Godzilla x Kong movies, but given how Monarch’s first season went, I wouldn’t be surprised if the stakes were all that much higher.
Season 2 sees the return of Kurt Russell as monster-hunter Lee Shaw, with his son Wyatt Russell also returning as a younger Shaw, before heading off on his own for a spin-off focused on the colonel and Monarch co-founder’s younger years. Also returning are Season 1 stars Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, and Anders Holm, alongside new Season 1 guest stars Takehiro Hira, Amber Midthunder, Curtiss Cook, Cliff Curtis, Dominique Tipper and Camilo Jiménez Varón.
But Monarch isn’t the only titan-centric project Legendary has in the works. Also in production is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which is set to release in 2027 and boasts an impressive cast that includes Sam Neill, Matthew Modine, Kaitlin Dever, and returning star Dan Stevens. Between that and the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero, Godzilla fans really are eating good this year.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 premieres on Apple TV+ on February 27.
