Lee Croninโ€™s The Mummy is putting the rot back into the infamous monster. A new trailer for the reimagining from the Evil Dead Rise director just arrived, and this definitely isnโ€™t the Brendan Fraser-starring franchise you know โ€” itโ€™s gorier, nastier, and scarier than weโ€™ve ever seen from this undead franchise before.ย

Starring Jack Reynor and May Calamawy, Croninโ€™s take on the creature feature classic focuses on a family broken by grief when their young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace. But, when she returns eight years later โ€” looking exactly the same, only discovered inside an ancient sarcophagus โ€” she brings with her a living nightmare, and a curse that will haunt her entire family. The film also stars Laia Costa, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcรณn, with Cronin directing from his own script.ย

This version of The Mummy is just the latest in a long line of films produced under the same title, beginning with the Boris Karloff-starring film from Universal in 1932. That, of course, led to the cult classic series starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, which spawned two sequels (one more beloved than the other) and is returning for another go with its beloved stars.ย

But that isnโ€™t all โ€” the studio also produced numerous mummy films in the 1940s and โ€˜50s, including The Mummyโ€™s Hand, The Mummyโ€™s Curse, and Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, because it wouldnโ€™t be Universal without the comedic duo going up against one of their most popular monsters ever. Croninโ€™s version, though, wonโ€™t be a barrel of laughs โ€” quite the opposite, if the trailerโ€™s anything to go by.ย

Croninโ€™s The Mummy is produced by James Wan, Jason Blum, John Keville, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Macdara Kelleher, with top of the line talent behind the camera, including director of photography Dave Garbett, production designer Nick Bassett, editor Bryan Shaw, costume designer Joanna Eatwell, and more.ย

Lee Cronin's The Mummy hits theaters on April 17.
