Rejoice, HAPPY DEATH DAY 3 Is Officially Moving Forward

Star Jessica Rothe and director Christopher Landon confirmed the news this weekend.

Christopher Landon's Happy Death Day duology is soon to become a trilogy, as star Jessica Rothe has confirmed that wheels are turning on the long-anticipated sequel.

Taking to the stage of the American Cinematheque over the weekend for a double feature screening of 2017's Happy Death Day and 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U, Rothe and Landon both confirmed that a third installment in the horror-comedy series is “moving forward”.

Both Happy Death Days followed Rothe as Tree Gelbman, a young woman murdered on the night of her birthday who subsequently finds herself reliving the day repeatedly, Groundhog Day style.

Happy Death Day 3, tentatively titled Happy Death Day to Us, has been talked about since 2019, with Landon, Rothe and producer Jason Blum all keen to return. Budget seemed to be the problem, as Landon confirmed last year that โ€œItโ€™s actually a bigger movie than the previous two films, and thatโ€™s part of the issue.โ€

Back in 2020, Rothe had the following to say to ComingSoon:

I would love if we had the opportunity to complete the trilogy. I know that Chris has it all mapped out in his genius brain, but I also know that we only want to complete it if we get to do it right.

I think itโ€™s just a question of seeing if the opportunity for that exists in the world. But the funny thing is I have a feeling whether itโ€™s now or in five years or ten or twenty, if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old, I know that we will get to tell the rest of the story. I love Tree, I love that character so much and I feel very, very grateful to have been a part of that.

Landon has also teased a potential crossover between Happy Death Day and horror-comedy slasher Freaky once Happy Death Day to Us exists, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

While you wait for more updates on Happy Death Day to Us, don't forget to catch Landon's latest thriller, Drop, in theaters on April 11.
