Takashi Yamazaki is returning to tackle the King of the Monsters once more.
Godzilla Minus One - Toho

Itโ€™s officially official: Weโ€™re getting a new Godzilla movie from the man who made one of the best Godzilla movies of all time. Toho has confirmed that Takashi Yamazaki, the writer, director and visual effects supervisor behind 2023โ€™s Godzilla Minus One, is returning to helm another entry in the long-running franchise. The announcement was made to help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the original 1954 kaiju classic, which graced the cover of FANGORIA #1 back in the day

Few details have been made available at this time, save for the above video, but this is both welcome news, in addition to being expected news. Minus One became an absolute juggernaut last year, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film in history in the U.S. at the box office. To date, the film has made $116 million worldwide. Not only that, but the film swept Japan's Academy Awards while also becoming the first Godzilla film in history to be nominated for – and to win – an Oscar. It took home the prize for Best Visual Effects, which was sorely deserved.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE

Without diving too much into speculation territory here, we can say definitively that itโ€™s a good time to be a fan of this franchise. For one, Toho isnโ€™t making us wait seven years for a new Japanese entry in the series like they did after Shin Godzilla hit theaters in 2016. They didnโ€™t waste a lot of time getting Yamazaki back in the saddle. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and Legendary are working on a follow up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from director Grant Sputore

On the TV side of things, Apple TV is working on a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The streamer is also said to be developing several spin-offs in that universe, which opens up a whole host of possibilities for the future.

At the same time, Godzilla Minus One is returning to theaters this weekend on more than 1,300 screens in North America. Both the original film and the black and white Minus Color version will be playing all across the country. So for those who missed it the first time around, this is the perfect opportunity to see it on the big screen while we wait impatiently for the follow-up to arrive.

Stay tuned for more details on the new Godzilla movie as we get them. For more, get the lowdown on the upcoming 4K, Blu-ray and DVD release of Minus One
