Thalassophobes beware – the murky, mysterious depths of the ocean and more are the topic of Something in the Water, a new non-fiction book from FANGORIA's own Rebekah McKendry (Glorious), Lisa Kröger (Monster, She Wrote) and Alyse Wax (The World of IT) for which we're excited to reveal the cover exclusively today.
Hitting shelves on March 2, 2027 via Beacon press, Something in the Water: A Deep Dive Into Aquatic Horror takes readers from Greek mythology to kaijus, from to Lovecraft to Shark Week, exploring all aspects of aquatic horror, ranging from real-life oddities and legends based on facts to more contemporary media portrayals in fiction, movies, and television.
An official press release details more:
In the 300,000 years Homo sapiens have walked the planet, we’ve explored less than 30% of the ocean. Yet, again and again, we’re pulled under by our enduring fascination with water, the mysteries it hides and the unrelenting power of its destructive force. Something in the Water is a fun and irreverent history of aquatic horror, one that is nearly as vast and deep as the waters it explores.
Something in the Water chronicles our obsession with the nightmarish mysteries of aquatic horror and is a must-read for anyone who wonders what else slithers alongside the creatures of the deep.

Something in the Water‘s intrepid authors have the following to say of their new work. Per Kröger:
The oceans are perhaps our greatest natural wonder, and we’ve told stories and built mythology around our waters since we began putting legends to paper. I am so excited to introduce readers to some of the facts behind the fiction. But beware–here there be monsters!
McKendry adds:
“I’ve always been obsessed with the water and the creatures that lurk within it. The ocean hides creatures so strange they seem fictional, until you realize many of the monsters on screen are inspired by real-life beings that have been lurking in the depths long before humans ever walked the Earth.”
While Wax shares her own personal (and relatable) experience with aquaphobia:
“I never thought of myself as being afraid of anything. Then one day I had a panic attack while in the ocean. I realized that I was terrified of the tiny, limbless fish swimming around me – and those I could not see. This book seemed like a reasonable response.”
Pre-orders for Something in the Water are now live on Bookshop.org, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon (or place an order with your local indie seller, if you'd prefer.)
