Horror franchises are chock full of so much lore that it can be hard to keep up sometimes — but that doesn’t mean we as fans aren’t always clamoring for more. This time, that lore comes in the form of a comic book, based on an iconic video game villain. Behavior Interactive has partnered with Titan Comics to release Dead by Daylight: The Hillbilly, exploring the backstory of one of the game’s most popular characters.

The Hillbilly is written by Derek Fridolfs, with art by Dean Kotz and Allison Hu, and variant covers by artists like Alex Horley, Francesca Ciregia, Niclas Mortensen, and Ilan Sheady. The series’ synopsis is as follows:

When officer Darnell Hollis makes the largest drugs bust in his small town’s history, the success draws the attention of City Hall. On the fast-track to success, this could be life-changing for Hollis and his young family. But the Rookie is haunted by horrific visions of violence and viscera in waking nightmares. And on Coldwind Farm, Hollis is confronted by a monster who is kept in a dark basement and lives for the slaughter. In the dense fog, a man called Boy tests the strength of his chains, waiting for the day he’ll break free…

“It's been so exciting to work on The Hillbilly,” said Titan Comics editor Phoebe Hedges. “Dead by Daylight is a rich tapestry of stories and this is something we've worked hard to reflect in the comic series. I'm so proud of what the team have created, and can safely say you'll never know what to predict with a new Dead by Daylight comic.”

This is not the first Dead by Daylight comic to hit shelves in recent years. Fans can also purchase Dead by Daylight Volume 1: The Legion, which unfolds the terrifying origins of the titular villain.

Dead by Daylight: The Hillbilly #1 hits shelves on April 8.
