Fresh off the news that Dan Trachtenberg's Predator: Badlands will be released in theaters, exciting news has emerged that a second, secret Trachtenberg Predator movie is coming out BEFORE Badlands – let's dissect this.
A new interview with 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell via The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Trachtenberg (whose Prey breathed new life into the sci-fi horror franchise) has another Predator movie on the way, one that we so far know nothing about. Here's the full quote:
Youโre blowing my mind. Letโs tackle this one at time. One Predator movie is coming out theatrically?
It's titled Badlands and it is an absolutely bonkers idea. It is a sci-fi thing, but itโs not what everybody thinks it is. And I mean, itโs awesome. It is so nuts. But in Dan, we trust. Now you said thereโs a second Predator movie.
Thereโs a second Predator movie that we have different plans for. Dan has actually directed both.So thereโs a secret Predator movieโ
Thereโs a secret Predator movie that will come out before the theatrical one but I canโt say anything about yet.
It's hardly surprising that Trachtenberg has been given the keys to the Predator franchise – despite being released straight to Hulu, Prey was a massive hit, nabbing six Emmy nominations and three FANGORIA Chainsaw Award wins for Best Costume Design, Best Creature FX and Best Streaming Premiere Film.
Furthermore, Asbell also teased that another Alien vs. Predator isn't entirely off the table…
Fine. Will we eventually see another Alien vs. Predator?
Probably. Not sure how I feel about that.
It wouldnโt be in the way you think. Thatโs the thing. Not in the way that it will just be called Alien vs. Predator or anything like the original movies. If we do this, theyโll be organically created out of these two franchises that weโve continued with characters that we fall in love with and those characters will combineโฆperhaps. But we havenโt gotten to that point. And weโre not just going to bang it out.
Given that Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez is also down to unite the two horror icons once again, it's genuinely not beyond the realms of possibility that this could actually happen.
Now that the news has been confirmed, it's time to wildly speculate. Will the untitled Predator movie be a sequel to Prey, with star Amber Midthunder returning? Will it be another standalone movie in the vein of Badlands? Maybe it'll be another period piece – throwing the alien beast into samurai-era Japan or 1960s Woodstock could be an absolute riot.
Whatever the case, we'll bring you more updates on Trachtenberg's new Predator as they roll in.
