If you think your partner’s parents are bad, just wait until you watch Buzzheart. Dark Star Pictures released a new trailer for Dennis Illiadis’ upcoming film, which hits digital tomorrow, and it’ll give you second thoughts about wanting to visit your in-laws this Christmas.

Written and directed by Illiadis, Buzzheart stars Evelina Papoulia, Giorgos Liantos, Konstantina Messini, and Claudio Kaya. The film’s synopsis is as follows:

Set in 1990s Athens, Buzzheart follows shy 19-year-old Argyris, who finds himself unexpectedly dating Mary—a beautiful and enigmatic young woman seemingly out of his league. When she invites him to her parents’ secluded country home, what begins as an awkward romantic getaway quickly spirals into something far more disturbing. Claiming to protect their fragile daughter, Mary’s parents subject Argyris to a series of increasingly bizarre and brutal tests to prove his worth.

As the weekend unfolds, the family’s deeply dysfunctional dynamics come into focus, trapping Argyris in a twisted psychological game of survival—one where nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted.

Illiadis is perhaps best known for his work directing the 2009 rape revenge remake The Last House on the Left, starring Tony Goldwyn. Buzzheart is his sixth film as director, having also helmed films like Hardcore, +1, and No Cap, all of which he wrote. The film originally premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and also earned praise at the MotelX Lisbon International Horror Film Festival.

Buzzheart joins a long lineup of independent horror films released by Dark Star, who notably released Alice Maio Mackey’s latest film, The Serpent’s Skin. Their lineup also includes Chainsaws Were Singing, Carnage For Christmas, King on Screen, and The Last Matinee

Buzzheart hits digital and on-demand on May 19.
