Succession star Brian Cox will join the second season of Showtime's Dexter: Resurrection in a regular role that seems him take up the serial killer mantle again, 40 years after his role as Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann's Manhunter.

Per Deadline, who reported the news earlier today, Cox will play The New York Ripper in the hit murder mystery show, a serial killer who terrorized the City years ago. Though no longer active as a killer, he’s found a new way to live into his infamy by continuing to taunt the survivors of his long-ago murder spree.

Deadline also reminds that Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection, from showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillip, ended with Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) as he discovers the identity of the New York Ripper when he found a folder belonging to last season’s bad guy, Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), emblazoned with the name “Don Frampt, New York Ripper”, part of a stash that Dexter retained as leads.

Last summer, Dexter: Resurrection became Showtime's most-streamed premiere, drawing 3.1 million global cross-platform viewers within its first three days. The first season also boasted a stellar supporting cast of Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Emilia Suárez, James Remar, Harry Morgan, Eric Stonestreet, and FANGORIA fave David Dastmalchian.

As we mentioned above, Dexter: Resurrection won't be Cox's first time playing a serial killer – he in fact provided the first big screen portrayal of Thomas Harris' infamous cannibal killer Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter before Anthony Hopkins ate up the role (pardon the pun) in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs.
